Owner reports

Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).

Tl contact owns a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The heat/defrost function failed in the vehicle. During the winter, the contact must remain cold in the vehicle and the windows become foggy instead of defrosting. The vehicle has been to the dealer twice and they stated that there was possibly a condenser leak in the heater, which caused the control lever for the heating unit to deteriorate. The contact stated that the repair was too expensive. He has found several complaints regarding this failure with the same model; therefore, he believes that the manufacturer should issue a recall. A relay shorted out due to a failure with the heating mechanism and the entire vehicle filled with smoke. There were no injuries. The vehicle has not yet been repaired. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 90,000.

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I purchased in 2003 with only 27K on it and a factory warranty I also purchased a extended bumper to bumper warranty from the Jeep dealer when I bought the vehicle at about 75K the vehicle lost all heat on the passenger side it only blows cold air I took the vehicle back to the dealer ship to have it looked at they told me it could of been one of two things either the heater control unit or the blend doors but almost always it is the blend doors, they then told me that it was not covered due to the warranty expired a few months before and that it would cost me over $1000 dollars to fix I have been driving the vehicle all this time with no heat because I can not afford to fix it and it is a major safety hazard as all winter long my car will not defrost, I can only see out a little space in the window when the temp drops to freezing, if I knew back …

I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited. The events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of Jeep. Consequently,(1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. To correct this problem, a "blend air door" is necessary at a cost of approximately $1,400. According to the certified service department at the local Jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited's with dual zone ventilation systems. Given the mileage of the vehicle at the time of 110,000, I thought it a reasonable failure. …

My has a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited and the air conditioner has melted where it plugs into the resistor that goes to the blower motor. I went to a local salvage yard in hopes of finding a wrecked vehicle similar to ours to but the wiring harness. To my dismay he had 2 but there was only one problem they had burned, with fires starting at the resistor described above. I left Jeep an email explaining what I found and that was afraid ours would come to the same fate. There response was that there were no active recalls on this vehicle and that there was nothing they could do. So I went the a local Jeep dealer to buy a new wiring harness($500 their cost)and was informed there was a patch or fix for the problem. I don't mind spending the money to fix our car but if there was not a serious problem why would there be a patch or quick fix for the problem. We have a 2 yr. …

Tl contact owns a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. When the heater was activated, there was no heat coming from the vents. The contact added antifreeze to the vehicle, but the heat still would not work. She took her vehicle to Firestone and they performed a flush. This did not correct the failure, but the pipes became hot. She took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the failure was caused by the revolving blend doors and the heating blend doors. The dealer would not repair the vehicle for free because it was not covered by the extended warranty. They stated that they would pay a portion of the repair cost. When she went to have the vehicle repaired, the parts were on back order. When the parts arrived, no one from the dealer called to inform her. The vehicle has not been repaired due to the repair cost. The VIN, engine size, number of cylinders, and powertrain were unknown. …

My ac fan had been cutting on and off randomly in my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I thought at first it May be a bad climate control control panel. A few days later, I smelled electrical burning smell in my car and the fan would not come on at all. Today I removed the blower fan, thinking it was bad, but it turns out the blower is fine, the blower control module relay and wiring harness had melted in the dashboard above where the passengers feet would rest. I have taken pictures and will be glad to send them upon request, but I think Jeep/Chrysler should have to replace this due to the potential fire threat and lack of safety (since the fuse did not blow). I attempted to replace the part through an automotive parts company, but the blower control module will need to be purchased straight from Chrysler corp. Please call me or email me with any follow up questions you May have. …

The in-dash heater/ac blend door is malfunctioning causing air flow not to be properly diverted between lower dash vents, dashboard vents and defroster vents. This is creating an unsafe condition whereby the windshield will not clear in rainstorms and will not stay defrosted in winter driving. A search on the internet and along with discussions with a local dealer working with jeeps for many years has LED me to understand that this is a long-known and very common defect with Jeep Grand cherokees. Prices to replace this blend door have ranged from $1000 to $1500 due to the fact that this is a very labor intensive replacement. I contact Chrysler assistance and they suggested that I contact you to identify this safety concern so that perhaps a technical service bulletin (TSB) could be issued and Chrysler would address the defective blend door for consumers experiencing this safety issue.

I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with 116,000 miles. The events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield, (2) no defrost on passenger side of windshield, (3) fogging of front passenger windows and windshield,(4) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (5) only cold air release on passenger side of Jeep. Consequently the windsheild and front windows do not defog, and no heat is provided from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. To correct this problem, a blend door assembly is required at a cost of approximately $1,350 inclusive of 8 hours of labor. According to the certified service department at the local Jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 1999-2004 Jeep Grand cherokees.

Today while driving the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited the heater stopped sending warm air to the passenger side defroster and heat outlets, has dual zone controls. I suspected it was a problem with thegateswhich control the amount of warm air to enter the passenger cabin. Upon researching the problem on the internet it appeared this was an identified defect affecting many Jeep Grand Cherokee owners. The problem was apparently not correctable without replacing the gates"and actuators. I called the local dealership, and they acknowledge dit is a known problem , and have received a technical service bulletin on the issue. Estimated repair cost was $1100 plus. In my opinion manufacturing defects should be covered through a recall and at no expense to the owner.
