CarLemons helps used-car buyers and owners answer one question: what goes wrong with this car?
The answers already exist. Every year owners file tens of thousands of safety complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, automakers file recall reports, and federal investigators publish their findings. But the data sits in government databases built for engineers, not for someone standing on a used-car lot.
We download those records, clean them up and organise them by make, model and model year: how many complaints, which systems fail and at what mileage, every recall with its remedy, and a fair comparison with the model's other years. Today the site covers 1,581 models and 11,408 model years.
Independence
CarLemons is independent. We are not affiliated with NHTSA, any automaker, dealer or repair shop, and no manufacturer can pay to change a rating. The site is supported by advertising.
How we rate cars
Read the methodology for exactly how complaints are counted and model years compared, and what the data can and can't tell you.
