Frequently asked questions

Are car recall repairs free?

Yes. Federal law requires manufacturers to fix safety recalls for free, regardless of whether you bought the car new or used. Some recalls have an age limit of about 15 years for free repairs.

How do I check my car for open recalls?

Enter the 17-character VIN in our VIN decoder & recall check or at nhtsa.gov/recalls. The VIN is on the driver-side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver door jamb and your registration.

What does "do not drive" mean on a recall?

The manufacturer has warned owners not to drive the vehicle until the repair is done, usually because of a risk of serious injury — for example an airbag inflator that can explode. Many dealers will tow the car in for free.
