In making a right hand turn, the steering wheel became uncontrollable and impossible to straighten out causing the vehicle to continue in its turning radius and crash into a sign on the sidewalk. The vehicle was transported to a salvage yard. I am of the belief that the ball joint failed. We have always maintained the car at Ford authorized dealerships and even replaced the ball joints recently. This car has a propensity for failing ball joints. I always maintained my "pre-owned" vehicle, purchased from dealership with 25,000 miles. Began to experience a plethora of problems after 2,000 miles. I've paid over $8,000 in repairs and only drove it 35,000 in 8 years time, but maintained it properly & regularly: I've had to change the brakes & pads, & battery twice, it's wheel rims constantly leak air in the winter causing flat tires, changed all 4 tires, and on August 2, 20017, while driving on the highway at 60 MPH, my steering control suddenly locked up! There was no control over the vehicle's movements- no ability to make lane adjustments or turns! I and my entire family including grandchildren could have been killed!! Luckily, the next off-ramp was a straight shot & I was able to exit the hwy safely and bring the vehicle to stop despite no steering control. …

Right after I purchased this vehicle, I noticed that it had a bad jerk, and chugging in the transmission. With the overdrive "off", it keeps the RPM's above 2000, and prevents it from chugging and jerking in the transmission. With the overdrive on it gears down extremely low after going down to 2000 RPM's, and losses a lot of power. When pressing down the gas pedal, it chugs and jerks severely. I have to let off the gas and then reapply the gas to stop it from jerking. Also, the power steering pops and makes noises. I got in the car today and had no brake power at all. Then had no brakes unless I pushed the brake pedal down with extreme force. And it was still extremely hard to stop my vehicle. Upon searching online, I am finding that these are very common issues with the 2008 Ford Edge vehicles. …

My wife was driving the vehicle and upon acceleration from a complete stop, the vehicle randomly would go into a "neutral-like" state. Rpms would increase dramatically, but the car would crawl between 3-5mph. The message, "od read error" would display on the dashboard, power steering would go out and brakes would not respond well (it was as if the car had turned off). When shifting from drive to park or reverse, the vehicle would jerk forward violently, as if rear-ended. Once the car was turned off and started again, the problem would go away. We brought the vehicle to the dealership multiple times and the dealership even determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. This was only at 37,600 miles. The dealer said it was a transmission issue, but it appears to be an on-board computer issue as well. …
