I have not owner this vehicle for very long but while driving the engine will tune off! The engine isnt stalling it straight tunes off at low speeds or high speeds. It will tune off while accelerating almost like its miss firing. Most time the vehicle will recover on it own but ultimately will tune off. This is important becuase it dose this while on the highway, in traffic and it unsafe not to mention scary.
Fuel tank has begun leaking diesel with less than 120000 miles on the vehicle. This is clearly the result of a design flaw on these diesel jeeps. The fuel tank is made of ferrous metal (steel) and is attached to the vehicle with a steel skid plate. There is very little clearance between the skid plate and the fuel tank. This results in the trapping of debris and moisture and resulting in rust damage to the fuel tank. This is a known issue with this vehicle that has been reported on several online consumer forums. For example: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f67/2008-crd-fuel-diesel-tank-leaking-2318409/ http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f67/07-grande-Cherokee-3-0l-diesel-fuel-leak-1503992/
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Within a month of owning the vehicle. The dealer replaced the heater motor, fuel pump, belts, and the air bag and check engine warning lights randomly flashed. The dealer replaced the driver side seat belt and indicated that the service engine light flashed because of the weather changes, which was not a diagnosis. The contact experienced the vehicle being difficult to start upon turning the key over. The dealer replaced and reprogrammed the keys, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving 30 MPH, the vehicle stalled without warning. The failure recurred randomly. The vehicle was taken to several independent mechanics where it was diagnosed that the TIPM and fuel pump failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
Vehicle turned off while driving down the highway. Lost power steering and power brakes and came to rest in the middle of the highway. Vehicle indicated problem was failed electric throttle control. Problem reoccurred 8 times while driving the vehicle to the dealer for service. Vehicle would start and go and would then shut off randomly. Major safety issue.
When filling up my Jeep with gas the filler neck over flows every single time and I heard the counterparts on the Dodge durango is having the same issue and there is a recall on them fixing the same issue. This is a huge environmental hazard and since other Jeep owners I know with the same make and model are having the same issue.
Noticed leaking of diesel from the fuel tank (wet spot in parking). Appears the tank was corroded, and leaking on one of the seams. According to garage, dirt collected between the tank (metal) and the skid plate (metal) resulted in the leak. Looking at some forums, this appears to be happening frequently.
Diesel fuel is leaking from bottom of the tank. Insufficient space between factory integrated skid plate/ hangar traps salt and grim/ debris . Insufficient drainage leads to fuel tank rotting from exterior side and leak raw diesel fuel onto roadways and parking surfaces.
I am filing this now for July 09 due to the same issue that happened yesterday, 4-7-10.. This is not a safe vehicle and Jeep needs to fix this problem. It is unsafe when a vehicle gives no warning and completely shuts off on an interstate. Also, please see my safety complaint odi # 10324403 for the 4-7-10 incident. In July 09, after going through a toll at exit 67 barneget toll , garden state parkway,nj, I accelerated to the merge point and vehicle shut down and engine stalled and lost power. Several attempts to restart didn't work. Seems like it shut down electrically and was not getting gas adequately. Seems to lack adequate power. Attempt to start several times with no luck, engine wouldn't stay running, long start-up inconsistent, dash lights did come on to inform of no power. Let sit to cool down vehicle and was able to start and move to a more safer location. …
On many occasions both my husband and I have smelled gasoline when getting into the car as well as when driving the car. This is not after fueling the car when there May be a smell of gasoline. Its when it has been sitting or just driving down the road. We have not noticed a leak. I have seen on the news today that the national highway traffic safety is wanting a recall of certain model Jeep Grand Cherokee's but the corporation is not planning to move forward with recalls. Although my Jeep Grand Cherokee is a 2008 model and not on the list of year models, this issue with fuel leakage and dangerous situations with rear end crashes concerns me since we have and continue to smell gasoline when getting into and driving our car. …
