Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2024 Toyota Tundra owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
The contact owned a 2024 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked in front the detached garage, the vehicle caught on fire and the incident was caught on the neighbor's camera at 4:31 AM. The neighbor then informed the contact of the incident. The contact noticed that the vehicle had caught on fire and the fire was mainly coming out of the gas pillar area. The contact stated that the entire vehicle had burned to the ground. The fire was extinguished by the fire department. A fire department report was filed. No police report was filed. There was no injury sustained. The vehicle remained at the scene and was in the process of being totaled by the insurance company. The dealer was notified of the failure and provided vehicle rental assistance. …
The fuel gauge as well as DTE resets to full when vehicle is parked nose up on slight incline. My driveway is a few degrees pitched and I park so that the nose is pointing slightly up. After going through 40-70 miles on a new full tank of fuel my fuel gauge reset to full 3 times 3 days in a row. Each time I did the trick to get the fuel sensor to reset/re-read everything while on flat ground. Video was sent to local dealer showing that the fuel gauge is resetting to full incorrectly. Toyota tried a software fix on 2022's only that did not fix the issue. They have not tried to fix it since the 2022's came out. 100's of examples of this can be found all over online. If you park on a steeper incline the tank can reset to full even if you had 1/2 or 3/4's of a tank left. This is dangerous as you could run out of fuel while driving down the highway. …
I upgraded from my 2017 Tacoma to a 2024 Tundra because of a growing family and the as advertised 2024 listed the same (if not better) fuel economy than my Tacoma. I am the truck says 17 city-22 highway mpg, I've not seen anything remotely close to that. Im currently getting 14 city 16.5 highway. I understand there are outside factors that could be at play, however I'm not even getting the city mpg on long trips. Having paid roughly $65k for this truck I think it should deliver as advertised. I've expressed my concern with my local dealership and was instructed to manually calculate the mpg to make sure the truck was showing the correct mpg. I can assure you that the mpg the truck is displaying is, unfortunately, correct. I've also filed a complaint with Toyota corporate and they pushed it back to my local dealership. No kne is taking accountability for this false advertisement. …
Brakes - When descending down a hill at speed the brakes on my truck pulsate as if the rotors are warped. My family was put at risk due to the brakes not functioning properly and causing me to let off the braking system in order to prevent overheating. I asked my dealer to review the brakes and they indicated nothing is wrong, I can reproduce this action anytime for the dealership with a simple ride up and down the mountain. This could result in a crash harming myself, my family, or other motorists. The problem began between 5k-10k miles and is getting worse. My truck currently has 16k miles. The brakes should last 40k-60k miles with no problem. Engine/fuel system - Since new, my truck has never met the window sticker EPA ratings listed. 22-23 models being recalled due to engine failure leads me to believe my engine is not performing at peak performance, thus, affecting fuel economy. …
It has been occurring ever since I purchased the truck in October 2023. I finally thought I should say something. Usually, the truck is at a complete stop. The truck can be warm or cold. As I press the accelerator down to move in the forward direction, there is a hesitation. No immediate acceleration. It lasts for at least one second before the acceleration begins. This can create a serious safety issue when there is cross traffic. Putting myself and passengers in possible danger of a collision. This occurs almost every time I drive the vehicle. When I had my truck in for a recall on 4/19/26, I asked a Toyota service manager if this is a common problem. He told me it is very common in the 2024 Toyota Tundra, with a V6 twin turbo. This leads me to believe that the Toyota Corporation is aware of the problem. …
Fuel gauge continues to reset to full with the miles to empty resting without putting gas in the truck. First reported to dealer and looked at on 7/12/24 with no solution. Second incident reported and truck left at dealer on 7/29/24. with no solution. 2 fuel gauge resets occured and reported to dealer on10/2/24 again with no solution except Toyota knows the problem but has no fixes. Last resetting of fuel gauge has occured on 10/9/24. I have been informed that other Toyota Tundra trucks have been into this dealership with the same problem of the fuel gauge resetting without putting any fuel in the truck. This vehicle should come with a reliable and working fuel gauge. This can become a hazard if running out of fuel. Dealership has now looked at this problem 3 times! 5 resets of the fuel gauge in 2315 miles.
2 issues to report: 1. Truck has a pull to the right since new. Found the front strut springs installed wrong. Attached photos show 2024 tundras on the dealer (pink dot on drivers side, yellow dot on passenger side) lot vs. mine (pink dot on passengers side, yellow dot on drivers side). Dealer corrected. Following repairs, pull is much better, but still present. Over 20 alignments completed; 3 by toyota and 3 by 3rd party. Problem continues. I believe it is a manufacturing defect in the safety equipment, suspension, or bent frame. 2. Toyota recalled V35A engines through my manufactured date. Because mine is a hybrid, it was excluded. Crankshaft main bearings seize due to a defect. I am forced to drive a vehicle on public roads while toyota recognizes the issue.
Reported fuel gauge problem previously in electrical category. Fuel gauge will reset itself to full without filling the gas tank. This has happened on 3 occasions with only 1000 miles on the vehicle. Have been to the dealership on several occasions with no permanent solution so far. First attempt at fix was to reprogram the combination meter and the gauge did accurately show the full level. However the problem reoccurred and brought vehicle back to dealer for 3rd trip and left it for 3 days. Dealer replicated the problem but corporate Toyota said it was due to the position of the sending unit in the tank. Can possibly cause serious problems if I run of of fuel on the highway or local road. Will have to monitor the fuel until Toyota comes up with a fix hopefully.
Vehicle hesitates to accelerate from stop or slow roll when pedal is engaged. This hesitation nearly caused a collision when attempting a left-hand turn in heavy traffic. Problem can be reproduced easily and is exacerbated when on an incline. It has not been confirmed by dealer or service center. Occurs regardless of whether auto start/stop feature is enabled or not. Putting transmission in "S" mode and manually down shifting to first gear appears to prevent the issue. After the hesitation, when the vehicle begins to accelerate, it performs a "hard" acceleration, like the pedal was slammed to the floor, even though consistent pressure was maintained on the the pedal. Problem has existed since purchasing the vehicle new in Dec. 2023.
Repeated resetting of fuel gauge to full without filling the gas tank. Have reported this problem and dealer tried to remedy but apparently not fixed. Truck filled on 9/18/24 and everything normal. Fuel gauge and miles to empty reset on 9/24/24 after having driven 59.5 miles. MPG stayed the same. Fuel gauge and miles to empty reset while truck was running after driving 25 miles since previous reset on 9/26/24. Watched the miles to empty roll on screen. Since previous dealer service can no longer use steering wheel button to reset the MPG. Can have a false sense of available fuel and cause potential accident if truck runs out of fuel on highway or get stranded somewhere.
