Owner reports

Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2007 Jeep Wrangler owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).

The door locks will unlock and lock by themselves. Without anything being touched. It does it so often that it will run the battery dead at night as the headlights come on every time the vehicle unlock is triggered. Also the horn will sound for no reason. Unprovoked at all hours. No warning whatsoever.

Multiple times yesterday, starting with (which I thought nothing of initially) the traction control light turning on while the Jeep was in park not moving. Shortly there after while driving straight on a highway about 45-55 MPH a knock or clunk was felt beneath the floor, immediately followed by the eas, traction control, ABS and brake lights illuminated, the airbag light flashed, the wipers running even though they were off, a hard pull to the right and high running/increasing RPM's on a level road with my foot off the accelerator. I hit the hazards, pulled off the road, looked at, in and under the Jeep, nothing looked amiss. …

My car started acting up. Neighbors would come regularly ring my house bell to let me know that the Jeep's headlights were on. The Jeep was parked in the street. The problem: it wouldn't stay locked. It would automatically lock and unlock whenever. We only have street parking at home and it was very stressful to leave the car open at night in the street or even when going places. Also the windshield wipers started getting stuck in the middle of the windshield or sometimes stopped working completely. This was very dangerous especially when it happened at high speeds on the highway! Finally, the right blinker wouldn't work and that problem seemed to be related to the broken locking/unlocking system. …

I opened the door to the Jeep and the wipers, horn and wiper fluid engaged non-stop without a key in the ignition. The only way to stop them was to disconnect the battery. When the battery cables are reconnected, the horn, wipers and wiper fluid sprayer are again engaged. On quick research, it was discovered that this is a known TIPM failure issue that can also effect the airbag (preventing deployment as well as randomly engaging it while driving), fuel injection causing sudden loss of power and vehicle control as well as issues with lights and gauges. Issues were severe enough to issue a recall on 2007 year models but similar issues with the 2008 are not addressed. I was fortunate the the vehicle was parked in my garage when the TIPM failed and not driving down the highway.

Driving down the road when suddenly the horn started honking, wipers started on their own as well as wiper fluid squirting , radio came on and lights turning on and off. Pulled over and even after the car was turned off and key removed ignition the car remained running with all electrical equipment running off and on. It seems that many other people have had this problem with their Jeep/ Chrysler vehicles. I replaced the battery cables and started the car again, it was fine for about 30 seconds then it all happened again until I removed the battery cables. I removed the battery cables to the car because I'm concerned that the electrical problem May cause a fire under the hood and possibly burn my house down.

The passenger side low beam operates intermittently. The problem has been traced to the solid state relay on the TIPM printed circuit board. The low beam usually operates after having the selector set to high beam for 20-30 minutes. The only remedy is replacing the TIPM at substantial cost for a relatively simple and very important, safety related vehicle function. Replacement TIPM units are not readily available, and there is no temporary repair possible. This failure effectively precludes legal operation of the vehicle until the costly repair can be completed.

2007 Jeep Wrangler unlimited sahara will stall while driving down the road at any given time/speed. Wipers will start going off without turning them on, followed by engine stalling, leaving me unable to accelerate. Meanwhile, my wheels lock up leaving me unable to steer. Very dangerous. Already had the TIPM reprogrammed in 2010, and then again 2 days ago. (October 16th, 2015). On the way home from getting it "fixed", wipers go off again and engine stalls. Paid $825 for nothing. This needs to be dealt with.
