Owner reports

Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2006 Honda Civic owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).

While driving on a public roadway, the tempered rear windshield spontaneously shattered with a violent, extremely loud pop resembling a gunshot. There was no vehicle ahead of me, no overpass, and absolutely no external object or projectile impacted the glass. The glass immediately webbed entirely across the surface from edge to edge due to internal stress, but is currently being held in place by window tint film. This year and model (2006 Honda Civic 2-door coupe) has a historical NHTSA recall for rear glass adhesion failure (Recall 06V326000). This spontaneous failure created an immediate, severe distraction and vision hazard while operating the vehicle at speed.

There was a recall on the 2006 Honda Civic EX Sun Visors which Honda replaced only to have it break again. I think Honda should be responsible to replace and to ensure it stays intact. It is very dangerous and difficult to drive with the direct sun in your eyes. Please respond. [redacted]

Honda recall.there was a safety recall on my 2006 Honda Civic [redacted], for the visors falling due to failure of internal springs that hold them in place, causing obstruction of vision as well as a distraction while driving. I went to the dealership where I purchased the vehicle, curttright Honda in enid OK. I was told the recall had expired and there was nothing they could do. For reasons unknown I was not aware of the recall, had I known I certainly would have taken corrective action in a timely manner. I was late responding to the recall notice but why does an important safety recall have an expiration date, especially since it has the potential to cause an accident or even death under the right circumstances? The recall was extended 7 years but that extension has passed as well. There was a class action law suit filed but I was not a part of it. …

Tl contact owns a 2006 Honda Civic. While driving 45 MPH, the contact swerved to avoid two deer and crashed into a mailbox. She attempted to regain control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. A police report was filed. The passenger side of the windshield shattered as designed into tiny pieces. The driver's side splintered into shards, resulting in severe eye damage to the driver. He was transported to a local hospital and several pieces of glass were removed from his eyes. A few days later, he was taken to an eye doctor to have several more pieces of glass removed from his eyes. The contact called the manufacturer to report the failure and they stated that they could not assist, and provided her with the number to the NHTSA hotline. The failure and current mileages were 34,000.

Driver and passenger sun visors come apart at the hard-plastic seams and fail to retract back into the headliner once they are engaged, leaving them blocking driver's view at all times. They cannot be adjusted to any gradual positioning. They simply hang straight down. Honda admitted the problem and has said they only warranted replacement for 7 years. When car was in warranty, dealer promised Honda would replace as long as the car had the original owner. This is a simple engineering fix that Honda will not address. It is now a safety issue as I cannot get replacements (visors last, on average 15-18 months and must be replaced constantly) and the visors now hang, obstructing my outward view to the side and through the windshield.

My 2006 Honda Civic ex sedan has had many problems with both sun visors since I bought the vehicle. The visors have both melted and broke which cause them to hang down in view and will not go in the up position. While driving down the 4-lane the visor on my side fell in my view, in shock I tried to stop the car since I could not see and was rear ended and rolled into a barrier. The visor now wont go up at all and is about to break off.

I was driving on the nj parkway coming home from work and there was a loud crack noise, at first I thought I got hit on my windshield by a rock, then about 5 seconds later my passenger side sun visor lowered and it is broken on the inside of the plastic. Now it will not stay up and causes a distraction to me while I'm driving. I contacted Honda and they said that they will not assist in any way in replacing a visor that they know is bad.

Sun visor glue melts in the heat and the sun visor stops functioning and creates a visibility problem. Also, pieces of plastic can flake off and fall on the driver, potentially getting in the driver's eye while driving. I have had so many issues with my Civic, not limited to a scattered transmission (~110K), a LED brake light going out (~90K), and now it looks like the 10-048 cracked engine block (just recently).

I have a 2006 Honda Civic coupe. At 12,000 miles both sun visors split apart within two weeks of each other. I contacted the Honda dealership I purchased it from and they scheduled me for replacements at no charge. By 16,000 miles, both sun visors broke again and the Honda dealership replaced them! Luckily, winter came and they lasted until the next summer. At round 29,000 miles they broke again and were replaced once again, under warranty. At 36,500 miles (500 miles after the warranty ran out and longer than the 6 months part warranty) they broke again! Now the Honda dealership will not replace them without charging me between $200 and $320, depending on which dealership I called. Talk about a rip off and a piece of crap! I thought Honda made quality??? …
