Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2008 Jeep Liberty owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated while at a standstill, the horn and windshield wipers would activate independently. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and told the contact to call NHTSA to file a complaint. The failure mileage was unavailable. THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE'S BATTERY WAS DISCONNECTED IN ORDER TO PREVENT THE FAILURE FROM RECURRING.
Bought the vehicle in va on 2/19/18, driving home to me and after 50 miles in rain the horn started going off every time the wipers moved. Pushed the horn button and the washer fluid started squirting out. Was able to pull over and had to shut the Jeep off then was able to continue. Stopped in ct for gas and got back on the interstate and the all lights turned off on the outside but all the dash warning lights turned on, wipers turned on, horn turned on, washer fluid sprayer went continuously and the motor would stop and start on its own, while moving! Luckily, made it to the side of the road and turned the ignition off but all electrical components continued to go off randomly then the car would not restart. After turning the key on and off multiple times, moving the shifting lever, pulling fuses from the panel under the hood and putting them back in it started running again. …

1st incident occurred in March 2013. I was driving to work in a 25mph zone. Suddenly, the horn started beeping, windshield wipers (front and rear) were going, washer fluid was pouring out, power door locks where going on and off. Had to pull over because I could not see with the fluid spraying out at full speed. I turn the car off and removed key from the ignition and this continued to go on for 5 minutes. Brought the car to manfredi dealership. They replaced the TIPM module which was very costly. A year and 1/2 later on May 18, 2015, I experienced the same exact problem. There is definitely a major flaw with this part. It's extremely dangerous when this occurs on a highway/turnpike doing the speed limit. This part should be recalled immediately. I should not be responsible to pay for yet another TIPM. …
A piece fell from under the seat which makes the seat feel loose. The side control panel for moving the seat back and forth does not give full control of adjusting the seat. The key less remote will not lock and unlock my doors. I have to use manual locks. I took it to be looked at, I was advised ground wires were crossing and blowing out a fuse/relay. The mophar skyliner sunroof is off track. There is a manufacturer defect in the sunroof. Chrysler has not issued a recall yet several jeeps are having and have had this issue. It is $300 for a new roof which will break/go off track within 2 years. Or $6000 to repair the roof I have which still does not guarantee it will break/go off track again. The roof opens on it's own while I am driving causing exposure to outside weather. …
While driving on x way at 70 MPH heard noise and saw section of roof slider lifting up and air gushing. Slowed to pull off and whole panel lifted up and almost blew off. Stopped and panel crashed down with front corner coming into passenger side seat. Fortunately no one was in the seat! We taped the panel down to nurse it home on side street at under 40 MPH. Dealer said would cost more than $1000 to fix, probably more and repair would not be guaranteed. We cannot afford to fix. We never used the slider in the past. Inquiries on internet reveal many similar incidents by other owners and their attempts to repair with estimates over $3000. Definitely a serious issue. Could have lost control of car if not already stopping, panel could have separated and hit other cars, panel coming into car could have injured driver or passenger!
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 Jeep Liberty. While driving 45 MPH, the sky slider fractured and did not seal properly. The failure caused air to seep in and water to leak when it rained. In addition, the windshield wipers failed to deactivate. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact had the sky slider repaired six times under warranty at dutchess Chrysler Jeep Dodge (2285 south rd, poughkeepsie, ny 12601, [phone]) where it was diagnosed that the sky slider motor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure intermittently recurred multiple times. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures and informed the contact that the part for the repair was no longer available. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 Jeep Liberty. While driving approximately 40 MPH, the panoramic sun roof slid back and forth, affecting its performance. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact opened the panoramic sun roof to see if it would stabilize, but it failed to close properly and the wind pushed it off track. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (bayside Jeep and Chrysler, queens, ny, [phone]), but the technician was unable to repair the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was taken back to the same dealer and they promised to take another look at the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
When drivers door was opened, vehicle horn, wipers both front and rear all began to operate and I was unable to start and maintain the engine running, it was necessary to disconnect the battery terminal in order to stop everything. A month later, I was in town and it did the same thing. In April while coming to a stop sign the vehicle stopped running and the horn, wipers and lights all began operating. I was able to control the vehicle until it stopped. The battery had to be disconnected in order to get the vehicle to run. The next afternoon, it did it again however disconnecting and reconnecting the battery did not solve the problem. I had to leave the battery disconnected all night in order for the vehicle to reset.
Intermittent problem. When starting car, wipers come on and turn signals fail to work. The only way to get wipers to stop is to pull the fuse. Turn signals remain inoperable. This problem has been ongoing for over 2 years. Have taken vehicle to dealer multiple times. Dealer claims they cannot locate a problem; however, there clearly is a problem. Do not feel safe driving car with wipers going and no turn signals. We have also had issues with interior lights remaining on. Very distracting to driver at night. Again, took vehicle to dealer and they cannot find a problem. Please help issue occurs while vehicle is stationary and in motion. We drive city and highway streets.
