Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
On this vehicle both front eat seatbelt receivers are faulty. This was not caused by an accident or excessive wear of the seatbelts. When you push the seatbelt into the receiver, it will not accept the seatbelt without first pushing down on the seatbelt button. Additionally, the vehicle does not recognize when the seatbelts are in use and the light on the dash stays on regardless. This issue started some time ago, however, more recently (past 3 weeks) the airbag light started coming on intermittently. I took the vehicle to a shop (not a dealer) and they diagnosed the airbag light as being caused by the driver's side seatbelt retractor spring malfunction. They were unable to repair and directed me to a dealer. Upon contacting the dealer they are only offering replacement of the seatbelts faulty seatbelts as customers expense. …
Driver seatbelt unlatches after secured. Several times i've had to make a sudden stop and my seatbelt comes undone . The airbag light did come on prior. I'm not sure if that warning light relates to seatbelt as well. I plan on taking it into the dealership to find out why the light is on. This is my sons car however I borrowed it for a few days and discovered this. He is a new driver And still learning about different mechanical issues that arise.
Something is wrong with both front driver and passenger seat belt buckle. When attempting to fasten the seat belt, something in the buckle prevents from clicking in the belt unless you press the button down. The seat belt sign stays on, raising safety concerns while operating the vehicle.
During rain storms both driver and passenger sides are flooded with water. This has ruined carpet in vehicle and will probably rust the bottom of the car. - vehicle stationery in driveway of home. The safety belts both driver and passenger sides are not working - do not secure unless you push down hard to engage the belt into lock mode. I do not feel safe when I have to manually engage the belt hook into the lock. I had an accident and crashed into a fence, the airbag did not deploy. Vehicle in motion at time. When I start the engine , vehicle still in park mode, it accelerates in high mode without stepping on gas pedal. On a city street.
Both front seatbelts stopping allowing the buckle to be latched with inserting the latch unless I depress the release button. After a few months the passenger seat belt light began illuminating and chiming but the buckle was latched. If I moved the latch within the buckle at a certain angle it would stop but I'd have to hold it there causing a safety issue while driving or have the passenger do this task. When I am stopped the chiming stops but the light stay on. The chiming restarts once the vehicle is in motion. I looked up seatbelt replacements and the dealer charges about $200 each for just the buckles. I was amazed that this is not a recall after researching and seeing hundreds of posts just like this one. How can this be petitioned for a recall? Does someone really need to be killed before we use some common sense here? Please help. …
I own a used 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo 4x4. The driver's and passenger's side seat belts are not latching unless I press down on the red button. The red seat belt indicator light won't go off and the audible chimes continuously and will not shut off while driving. The vehicle manual does describe a method in which you can disable the seatbelt indicator chime. However, to be able to do this you must be able to have the seatbelt in the buckled position, which the vehicle is not able to detect as the seatbelts are faulty. The only way to stop the chime is to snip the seat belt sensor and ground wires coming from the vehicles computer underneath the driver and passenger seats and splice them together. This will ground out the sensor but it also causes the airbag warning light to come on. …
Less then 30 days ago I purchased a used 2006 Jeep Cherokee laredo 4x2. The dealer said the airbag sensor just needed replaced no big deal. Now I am experiencing the same thing as alot of older people. The driver's side seat belt started not latching unless I press down on the red button. So then the red seat belt indicator light won't go off and the audible chimes continuously and will not shut off while driving no matter what I do. Moving the seat belt around to try and get the chime to stop as well as the audible chiming while driving makes it very annoying and distracting from the road. I need answers on why this should be at my cost when between the airbag and seat belt sensors are truly safety issue. Their is no warranty at 154457 miles. Please advise on the airbag recall etc... The airbag light was on when purchased 7/18/17. …

2006 "laredo 4wd" series just like all 2005-2010 regular Jeep Cherokee series has 1000's of people complaining on major safety issues with inner section of all 4 doors + how cheap this terrible plastic components on all (4) door handles and requires complete inner door panels @ $500 each (not including labor). Cheap plastic door panel material is honestly able to be snapped with fingers.
