Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2010 GMC Yukon owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
The contact owns a 2010 GMC Yukon. The contact stated the front driver's side dashboard was fractured. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V050000 (Air Bags) and took the vehicle to a local dealer to be repaired. The dealer declined to service the vehicle under recall due to the dashboard being fractured. The dealer and manufacturer informed the contact that the recall repair would be performed once the dashboard was replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
The open recall on this vehicle cannot be complete without the customer being fully responsible for damage that might be caused during the recall repair. GM is advising all dealerships to force customers to sign a waiver if they have the recall work performed releasing GM and the dealer from all responsibility of any damage done to the dashboard. If the dashboard is damaged and has to be replaced then the customer is faced with a more than $1000 repair job therefore the customer must choose between feeding and caring for their family or risking the passenger being seriously injured or killed due to the faulty airbag issue. GM should stand behind the decision they made to use cheap plastic for their dashboards on this vehicle instead of punishing their customers and costing them more money or risking injury or death to passengers.
Takata recall. The contact owns a 2010 GMC Yukon. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 21V054000 (Air Bags) however, the part to do the recall was unavailable. The contact called the local dealer who stated the parts were not available. The contact stated the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not notified. The contact had not experienced a failure. The VIN was invalid.
Dash is cracked scared that sharp objects may fly into my family face if air bags are deployed the truck lost all power and left me and my daughter stranded right in the middle of traffic about got hit thank God we didn't GM needs to take care of these matters and take it seriously people could be seriously hurt or killed And if I hit a bump my cruise control will shut off automatically as if i pushed the button but i never touched anything
The dashboard on our 2010 GMC yukon was cracking. While driving to pick up my daughter from school, the dashboard center section calapsed inside the dashboard. It was very alarming and is leaving the airbag case exposed.
My wife was in an accident where the at-fault driver ran a red light and t-boned her drivers side front door and pillar area while crossing an intersection. Our car was hit hard enough to where the floor board and fire wall are wrinkled. Not one air bag deployed. The Toyota truck that struck my wifes car had it's air bags deployed. The auto body shop is telling me, because of the hard impact the vehicle is a total loss.
I have a 2010 Yukon denali with now, 42000 miles this happened in 2014 with about 39000 miles--- I dont drive but 5000 miles a year and my vehicle is kept mostly in the garage and is very well taken care of. I noticed one crack near front passenger airbag- then a few months later a newer, larger crack began forming near the drivers side dashboard over the spedometer. I have the gmpp plan which is GM's highest extended warranty and cost about $2500. They told me that my dashboard isnt covered under my gmpp warranty becuase the dash is considered "trim" ive contacted GM numerous times hoping to get a more workable csr to assist in monetary assistance with getting the dashboard replaced--- I receive little to no financial assistance after two failed attempts. …
To whom it May concern; I own a 2010 GMC Yukon. I as well as others have a cracked dashboard, one near the deployment of my airbag and one on the driver side by the steering column. Considering GMC's interest in the safety and quality of their vehicles. It is a shame that there is not a recall because of such reason as death! There is a huge concern that the sharp edges of the cracks can absolutely cause he airbag to deploy and getting your hand cut and infection is a definite possibility. Not to mention the attention that the cracked dash is. When someone is walking by it is very noticeable and looks bad for GMC. This has been broadcast-ed on the memphis, tn news lately and one dash out of plenty has been properly taken care of. If this issue is not resolved and the importance of this I do plan on going to the news and taken further action. …
1. Cracked dashboard - cracked dashboard - dashboard is deteriorating. Numerous cracks. Vehicle is parked in the shade 90% of the time and after 30,000 miles on it. It has never been in any accident. There is a dashboard crack next to the airbag on the dashboard. My concern is with the Takata inflators and potential shrapnel produced from the rotting dashboard becoming airborne during an accident. There is a website that shows the majority of these GM dashboards are defective and falling apart beyond cosmetic appearance. What kind of safety testing has been done in relation to cracked dashboards causing injuries? 2. Takata recall - there should be a solution to the Takata inflator issue and a recall on GM cracked plastic dashboards. It is past August of 2017 and I have heard nothing regarding the airbag issue solution. …
The plastic dash board has cracked. It started out small coming from the passenger side airbag and stretching to the edge of that dash panel. Now a second part of the dash has cracked by the driver side over the instrument gauge cluster. The portion of the dash that's cracked by the passenger airbag is my biggest concern as it could break off and cause sharp pieces to hit the passenger in the face of the airbag was deployed. My GMC dealer stated my extended warranty doesn't cover this "cosmetic" issue and therefore I will have to come out of pocket for a portion of the cost. This is unacceptable. I'm the original owner and he vehicle is garaged. There could be no long term damage to the dash other than what it's intended to do which is to be under the windshield. GMC - own this issue and correct the problem please. …

NHTSA investigations
Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited.
