Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 1996 Chevrolet Blazer owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
Tl contact owns a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer. The contact stated that the air conditioner would not function. In addition, the radiator hose was leaking and the vehicle was taken to a repair shop for inspection. The contact was informed that there was a crack on the block (heater core) of the radiator. The radiator hose was leaking at the connection of the hose. The vehicle also overheated at times, in which the mechanic stated that this failure was included in NHTSA campaign id number 06e043000 (fuel system, gasoline). The dealer refused to perform the recall repair because other work needed to be done at the contact's expense. The current mileage was 169,123 and failure mileage was approximately 165,000. Updated 09/15/08 the consumer stated brown sludge was found in the radiator. Updated 09/18/08.
Dealer replaced heater core due to leak and found sludge in cooling system (dex cool). Heater core replaced and system flushed 4 times. Heater core replaced again on 1/19/03, water pump replaced in 2/03. Radiator has large leak 5/22/03. Sludge visible in radiator and overflow bottle. Dealer/GM indicates problem with sludge build up caused by owner not maintaining system. Head gasket replaced in 2001 and windshield wiper circuit board in 2001 (bad solder joint) - GM indicated the windshield wiper problem not associated with VIN number. All costs out of pocket.
Shortly after I purchased my 1996 Chevy 4x4 Blazer, the air conditioner stopped working. After getting this serviced, and not using it during the winter months. I took it in to have it checked again and was told the condenser was bad and would have to be replaced. This has not only happened on this vehicle, but also on the Chevrolet truck we had owned before. While talking with the mechanic he said that he has work on lots of chevys with trouble in the condenser. I think this matter should be researched and taken care of.
Tl* the contact owns a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer. The contact stated that the vehicle was parked when the interior caught on fire. The fire department came and extinguished the fire. The fire department informed the contact that the origin of the fire was from the heater. Three weeks prior to the fire, the vehicle had regular maintenance performed. There were no injuries and the vehicle was destroyed. A fire report was filed. The manufacturer was not notified of the incident. The failure mileage was unknown.
Windshield wipers front & rear failed, water pump quit, drive shaft broke, ball joints right front broke, heater quit, air conditioner quit. Drivers side rear view mirror fell off, steering problems, brake problems, universal joints worn out, cracked front rotors, etc.
Air conditioner first failed about 3 years ago (still under warranty at the time). Dealer refilled..said could not find leak. Little over year later same occurrence...dealer refilled. August of 2001 occurred again...this time dealer put dye in so could find leak when it happened again....did not notice til warm weather this year that it had failed again...took to dealer and had refilled again...this time dealer said leak was found at compressor...said compressor was going bad and would cost about $500 dollars to correct. Am filing same info with Chevrolet. This is my 4th Blazer but lots of problems with this one. 4 recalls...defective door panel...replaced at Chevrolet's OK after reporting to the company.
This cooling system failure has resulted in my having to replace the heater core and hoses as well as the radiator due to the amount and thickness of the corrosion/rust inside. The system will have to be flushed...Chevy is aware of this issue as referenced by their repair bulletins...the extend and cost of the damage is understated.... I m out of pocket $1400 to replace a radiator a heating core and other component due to not being notified sooner about the possibility of the problem occurring and thereby having the vehicle inspected for the probably issue!
Radiator and engine completely flushed, cap and thermostat replaced due to "mud" in system.dealer told me "mud" was actually metal and sand left in engine block during the production/milling process. 1 month after flush the system is clogged again with this mud. Dealer saying another flush is needed along with possible water pump and heater core replacement. Dealer and other local car maintenance companies said they have seen this many times in these blazers. This is obviously a problem GM should be held accountable for.
We recently purchased this 1996 Blazer and due to it being used we are without warranty. The windshield wipers sometimes do not come on and when they are working they sometimes stop in the midst of a rainstorm. This is extremely dangerous and has caused us on more than one occasion the need to stop driving for our safety and other motorists. The air conditioner is hit and miss just like the wiper, but thank heavens this is not a safety issue only a comfort issue.
Most of the problems that surfaced had already been repaired at least once. Most of the problems had already been repaired at least once under warranty and have recurred. The A/C seal leaked and needed a pump. There were problems with the idler pulley, oil filter lines, crank shaft, door hinges, power steering, throttle positioner sensor 2, left front axle seal, and the differential side covers.
