Owner reports

Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).

Visor recall: I noticed that the visor on the drivers side was gradually coming down and despite asking my local dealership to look into it, the problem was deferred and I was asked to wait until it got much worse. Last week it actually came close to a point of becoming detached altogether; I reviewed the warranty/extended warranty information on the issue and to my surprise I realized that was an extended warranty coverage on this problem (vehicles 2007-2011); however upon calling Toyota I was told that my vehicle was never a part of the extended warranty ztt and even if it was I wouldn't qualify since I was outside of the 7 years of time limit. I never received any notification, neither the dealer made me aware of the problem, and now I am put in a position where I have to get it replaced with out of pocket expenses (not cheap ~ 295.00 parts + labor + taxes). …

I started to feel sticky spots on the top-side dashboard facing windshield. The soft, sticky spots were accumulating light-colored dust over the past year. They were not greasy, but extremely sticky and tacky to the touch. The accumulated dust was not cleanable or able to be removed without damaging dashboard material. (I rubbed off the top layer of plastic trying to gently clean with a wet poly towel). They were starting to reflect off my windshield during daytime driving. I ignored this issue for a while but lately noticed the interior glare is getting worse toward the front of my dashboard at the windshield junction. It's especially present on bright days where the sun is high up. This is presenting a potentially serious safety issue with regards to outward driving visibility. Toyota has been contacted and I started a problem case with them. …

Rear windshield exploded while sitting in driveway on 8/15/15. Dashboard very shiny and sticky, causing a horrible glare. The glare gets so bad that sometimes I can't see other drivers. Toyota says they will replace it when parts come in, it's been 2 years since then and still no parts. In the meantime, the glare gets worse. It's just a matter of time before an accident occurs.

2007 model year Toyota camrys were manufactured using a dashboard material that deteriorates with exposure to sunlight. Specifically, the plastic becomes very shiny, very tacky, and easy to damage. When the sun angle is correct, the light reflects off the shiny plastic, and then reflects off the windshield into the driver's eyes, producing a glare that represents, in my opinion, a safety hazard. A considerable amount of plastic is also being deposited daily on the windshield inner surface, producing a whitish haze that reduces visibility and increases scattered light. Numerous Toyota Camry (and some Lexus) owners are reporting the same problem, primarily in locations that receive more sunlight (florida, texas, puerto rico, and hawaii, for example, as an internet search can easily show; to see a video, search on youtube for "Toyota Camry sticky dashboard"). …

The dashboard of my 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid is melting!! The melting is creating a glare on the windshield making it very hard to see at times. A simple internet search will yield you 100's of results of the same complaint for this make/model. Toyota is aware of the issue as they have changed the material used on the dash. My inquiries to Toyota corp and the dealership where I bought my vehicle are not being taken seriously and I really fear that the visibility issues can result in death or accidents. Currently, there is a class-action lawsuit for their sister company, Lexus, regarding the recalling of their dashboards using the same exact material. It is unfair that Toyota corp is only addressing the needs of their luxury model car owners and creating an environment that is unsafe for me and my children. …

Severe sun glare reflecting from the brushed stainless steel appliques applied to the dash, center console, and front door panels interferes with driver and passenger vision to the point of being a driving safety hazard during some lighting conditions (high sun angle during the May-September season). The appliques act like a mirror and can direct the sun's rays directly at the eyes causing temporary vision problems. The vehicle is a 2007 Toyota Hybrid "50th anniversary edition" with special factory upgrades (including these appliques). To my knowledge only 2500 cars of this type were manufactured and sold. Toyota denies a problem exists and states the car was "certified" for sale by the NHTSA. I have digital photos of the glare conditions that I could email to you. Please advise. I am removing and replacing the appliques with non reflective material at my expense. …

The driver side visor will not go down all the way (against the windshield) and neither will it stay up (against the car interior ceiling). When it flops down it obscures visibility into the rearview mirror as well as out the windshield. There is no anticipating when it will come down. The only way to get it out of the way is to push it against the driver side window, thus obscuring that view and providing no protection against the sun's glare when needed. I have read countless accounts of this same situation among owners of this same vehicle. I have read that some part of the visor is defective and has been redesigned. This is an unsafe situation which Toyota has, in my opinion, admitted there is a problem. I resent having to spend the money to replace this part myself but I will have to. I hope I can before something happens.

Drivers side sun visor suddenly broke, obstructing view while driving. The visor will no longer return to the upright position and flops toward the driver. I am afraid in an accident I might slam my head directly into the sun visor, so I think this is a serious safety hazard. Contacted the dealer, and they want $260 to replace with the same visor. Looking online, this appears to be a common problem, and I should expect the replacement to break as well, including the passenger side eventually. Please ask for a safety recall before someone gets hurt! In the meantime I intend to remove the visor and just drive without one as there is no safe replacement available and Toyota has not addressed the issue despite numerous complaints online. Just google Toyota sun visor problem and you will see several models with this manufacturing defect.

2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid... Both sun visors fail at the pivot point and fall down, blocking the drivers view, while driving. Both Toyota and their respective dealers refuse to honor their warranty. They call the visors 'trim pieces' making them ineligible for warranty. I maintain that having a slab of material fall down and block the drivers view due to a defect at 36,000 miles constitutes an unacceptable safety hazard and should be corrected immediately. In several email and telephone exchanges, Toyota representatives dismiss my claim with canned, scripted replies. They won't even listen to reason. This is a well-known and widespread defect on this line of cars. If it hasn't happened already, someone is going to get injured or killed in a collision caused by a sudden blocked view of the road. Please help!

The driver's side sun visor of my 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid suddenly broke causing it to swing down and completely block my vision. Attempts to swing the visor out of the way failed as the visor is completely loose and swings wildly when turning. I have tried using tape to secure the visor in the up position, but eventually the tape fails. Additionally there are no directions or easily detectable way to remove the visor. After calling Toyota I was informed it would cost $308.70 to replace a part that should never have failed (especially with only 4 years of use). I have read online that this seems to be an issue that numerous Toyota owners are having and wanted to document my troubles.
