Dt*: the contact stated upon visual inspection it was noticed the strut towers were rusted. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop who determined the strut towers needed to be replaced. The vehicle is located in a salt belt state. Updated 10/17/2006 - updated 03/07/07
I've purchased a 1999 Grand Voyager and noticed that the driver side strut tower was rotting out and the passenger side was starting to rust as well , but not to the degree as the drivers side.. I looked up and found no recall this situation, but was informed that Chrysler ,Plymouth , Dodge , knew about this since 1996 but did nothing to correct it until 2001. I enjoy my vehicle but the repairs for this problem are a bit too much for me at this time due to my disability ,and the fact that I am on a very limited income. Is there any one that can assist me in getting my vehicle repair?
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. While driving the contact stated that a loud rattling noise was on the front passenger and driver side of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic, who diagnosed that the strut tower was covered with rust. The dealer nor manufacturer were notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 125,000. Updated 08/31/11 updated 12/105/11
Consumer took the vehicle to the dealership to be inspected and the mechanic determined that the strut towers were rusting prematurely. The left side strut tower blistered/bubble. Extensive rust under the blistered paint area. The consumer was told that the rust had been there for a long time under the paint surface.
The top of the driver's side front shock tower, as viewed from under the hood, is very corroded. Mechanic advised getting rid of vehicle as soon as possible or face extensive $ repairs for shock tower and strut. Area of corrosion was professionally rust proofed in 1998 and was still able to corrode. I wonder how bad the corrosion is on these vehicles that were not rust proofed? Shock tower corrosion appears to be an ongoing problem with all 1996-2001 Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth minivans. Its only a matter of time before struts start popping through the hoods on these vehicles, thus causing accidents. Advise NHTSA to investigate as soon as possible.

I was in my way to work when it was raining ever time it rains the belts comes off this is very dangerous. I had no power steering at all when this happen with muscle I managed to pull over onto the shoulder of the road. Once water hits the tension wheel belt it knocks it off which makes it slide off every time.
