Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2006 Honda CR-V owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
The contact owns a 2006 Honda CR-V. The contact received notification and post cards regarding Takata Air bags recall and would like to be removed from the recall distribution list. The local dealer and manufacturer were contacted.
Tl* the contact owned a 2006 Honda CR-v. The contact stated that an unknown recall repair was performed on the vehicle, but it did not remedy the failure. While traveling approximately 30 MPH, the contact's vehicle was involved in a crash. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. The driver sustained whiplash, head, and back pains, which required medical attention. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop and an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer's investigator determined that the air bags did not have a failure. The vehicle was destroyed. The NHTSA campaign number and failure mileage were not available. Ma 08/10/15 the consumer stated that the manufacturer advised that the air bags don't always open at a 30 mile front end crash. Updated 1/30/2015
Tl* the contact owned a 2006 Honda CR-v. While driving distracted at approximately 25 MPH, the contact struck a curb and down a ravine before landing in between two mountains. All of the air bags deployed except the air bag in the steering wheel. The contact sustained injuries that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to a body shop. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 15V320000 (air bags); however, the crash occurred prior to the contact receiving the recall notification. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.
The used 2006 Honda CR-v AWD that I purchased from the Honda dealer in oct 2016 was involved in an accident on the 405 freeway in kirkland, wa in mar 2017. The Honda CR-v rear ended another vehicle, driving approximately 60 miles per hour. Both driver and passenger air bags did not deploy.
I was in traffic and rear ended the auto in front of me. Although my car was deemed a total loss, and the front end was damaged into the motor compartment, my airbags did not deploy...updated 05/07/15
The red air-bag indicator began glowing steady red on March 22, 2016. On March 28, I took the vehicle to local Honda dealer to check on the problem. Their diagnostic test that indicates "internal failure of SRS unit". This part apparently tells the airbag system whether or not someone is sitting in either / both of the front. The dealer's technician said that the bag 'May or May not deploy in an accident' and it is 'not likely' that the airbag will deploy while I am driving down the road. Apparently, Honda does not consider this sensor an integral part of the safety system. I can have a new unit installed for $574.95. I was also required to pay for the diagnostic, $112.30, since this is a part the manufacturer does not cover. …
After finding out via the owner's site that my airbag had been recalled I made an appointment with my local Honda dealer to have my airbag replaced. I was told the parts were not in stock and I would receive a call to update me about availability before my appointment. I had to call back for the update and was told that they did not receive the parts. Nearly a month later I called back to check on the status of the parts and was told that they had no estimate of when they would arrive. When I expressed concern at the delay I was told that I shouldn't complain about waiting a month - there were customers who had been waiting more than three months. The recall date is almost a year old and I have still not received a recall notification. It has now been nearly two months that I have been waiting to have my airbag replaced after finding out about the recall. …
We received the notice below about a life safety issue with the passenger side airbag. We contacted multiple Honda service dealerships, only to be told the parts are not in stock and it will be anywhere from 2-weeks to 2-months before they are in stock to do the repair.....so until then, my daughter is driving a Honda CR-v with a known life safety issue and can't get it addressed by the manufacturer/dealer....that is very unsafe, negligent, etc. Here are the details of the notice: vehicle VIN#: [redacted] recall description: NHTSA recall number: 16v-344 mfr campaign id: ka0 campaign description: passenger airbag inflator the notice said it was urgent to get this addressed?....but then provides no support or way to get it addressed? [redacted]
A safety recall was issued by Honda dated June 2016 for the passenger air bag inflator advising that the passenger seat should not be used until the inflator is replaced to avoid injury to the passenger. I contacted my local Honda dealer to schedule an appointment to repair this deficiency 7-11-2016 and was assured that I would be notified when the defective part would be available for installation. I checked back 7-29-2016 and was told there was a large backlog on the recall and to call Honda customer service for a resolution to the problem. I called Honda 8-10-2016 and 8-23-2016, was issued a case # 04914374 but was told the deficiency could not be repaired any time soon. It is now sept 13, 2016 and I still can't use the passenger seat in my Honda.
Complaint is that owner of vehicle (the original buyer) has still not received a recall notice for the on-going problematic Takata airbags. The recall notice has now been expanded to all 2006 Honda crv's, not just location specific vehicles. I have contacted Honda customer service but have still not received an official recall for airbags. Alarming and frustrating, considering people have been maimed, paralyzed, and killed by these very Honda-installed Takata airbags. They say they are being "pro-active" which is at best a joke. They need to take responsibility for their defective airbags and replace them in all Honda vehicles with Takata airbags. Honda and Takata both suck for not doing the right thing!

Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited.
