NHTSA defect investigations
Federal safety investigators have looked into 3 possible defects involving the 2014 Ford Fusion Energi:
Door Latch Failures
In December 2019, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation based on 235 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging doors failed to latch when closed, and/or inadvertently opened while driving, on model year (MY) 2012-2014 Ford Fiesta, and 2013-2014 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ.
Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited.
Pedestrian alert sounds
NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles.
What 2014 Ford Fusion Energi owners say
Electrical system
The car is suffering random shutdown and intermittent times. The battery is no longer holding a charge and when it shuts down this places me at extreme risk. Ford is unable to fix it so this is no longer happening without replacing the High Voltage battery - battery from ford alone is 11k. I cannot be the only one who is dealing with this car doing this.
Drove the car down a mountain road and somehow managed to regenerate 29 miles on the battery. Thought that very strange as the highest charge or regen achieved prior to this showed 24 miles and did not think the battery could hold that much. Returned home about 9:30 pm with an empty plug-in charge. At approximately 9:50 pm plugged in the car for charging using the 120v Ford PHEV charger supplied with the vehicle. At approximately 3 am awoke smelling electrical fire. Followed the smell to the garage and discovered that the PHEV charger plug had completely burned up along with the outlet receptacle, plastic receptacle box and some of the stud the receptacle box was attached to. Somehow the attached garage structure did not become engulfed; rather, the fire went out somehow by itself. …
Transmission & drivetrain
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion Energi. The contact stated that after parking and turning off the vehicle, the vehicle started rolling backward. The contact could hear an abnormal metal grinding sound. The vehicle then stopped independently. Upon starting the vehicle and attempting to drive, the vehicle failed to move. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer where the battery was replaced. The vehicle was then towed to a second dealer, Lance Cunningham Ford (4101 Clinton Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37912), where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The dealer advised the contact that he had to pay out of pocket for the repair. The vehicle had been at the dealer since February. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact later received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V413000 (Power Train) however, parts to do the recall repair were not yet available. …

I've had nothing but problems with this car it's been to the dealer probably about 53 of the five times it's been in for the cross traffic sensor malfunction and yet again it still is showing malfunction I am so close to filing a lemon law on this vehicle it's a 2014 with 60,000 miles and I can't even trust it to get me to and from work anymore.
