Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 1999 Ford F-350 owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
01/2016: vehicle was being driven home from work when there was a loss of engine power. Vehicle was able to roll to a stop in the parking lot of a church. Later it was determined this resulted from failure of #7 cylinder injector unit, believed to have failed due to delamination inside of fuel tank. About 02/23/2014, 207980 miles: fuel tank had been removed and internal screens cleared due to the engine stalling while driving prior to injector failure. Internal pick-up tube screens were blocked with delamination material from the inside of the tank. Two new fuel pumps had been purchased and installed prior to cleaning the internal pick-up screens. I have receipts for work and parts relating to the fuel system problem.
Takata recall. I was driving down the road and my truck shut off randomly my overdrive light started flashing after this and continued to flash and still shuts off so I replaced my fuel filter, cps sensor and it still shuts off. It's like I'm goin down the road and it stalls. It does it more than once when I'm driving I just shut it off and start it again.
The left rear wheel separated from the vehicle, which caused the vehicle jerk foward. The consumer requested an 03 vehicle or reimbursement for the incidental expenses. After the purchase of the vehicle, the manual, lockable hub(s) began to fail. The dealer convinced the consumer(s) to purchase 8 ply tires, but this didn't reduce the noise or hub problems, the consumer also experienced acceleration problem's. The dealer couldn't find the problem. The engine idled rough and the engine light had come on. A bad cam sensor was found, and a sound had come from the fuel pump. An adapter to the metal plate was built in, extending from the underdash, to the firewall, to provide a better ground system. Scc
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 Ford f-350 pick up. The contact was driving 60 MPH when the fuel straps detached from the fuel tank. The vehicle was towed to dealer where the dealer confirmed that both fuel tank straps were rusted and needed replacement. The manufacturer was contacted and they confirmed the VIN did not qualify for recall under NHTSA campaign id number: 99V311000 ( fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly). The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 121,000 and the current mileage was 124,000.
Rear fuel tank strap that holds the fuel tank in position failed. In 2003 Ford had a recall on this truck to install safety straps around the fuel tank in case there was a failure of the main straps. When the rear strap failed the safety strap failed and the only thing holding the tank in the truck was the fuel line. The tank was about 3/4 full if it had separated all together it would have been a disaster and probably a fire.
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 Ford f-350. While the vehicle was undergoing routine maintenance, the mechanic noticed that the fuel straps were disconnected and covered with rust. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 122,000. Updated 10/28/2014 updated 04/21/2015
Driving my 1999 Ford f350 diesel down the highway, approximately 50 MPH, heard a thump and loud scraping noise. Could not pull over due to traffic, pulled over when traffic cleared, around another 100 feet. I got out and looked around and under truck, to discover fuel tank was dragging along the highway. Rear fuel tank strap had broken.
Engine died while traveling with wife and small children in truck on freeway. Following engine failure, brakes and steering became very difficult to manage while coasting off of freeway onto exit. Two of these instances occurred while driving on freeway within 2 months of each other. Engine began sputtering and then died completely within 10 seconds. The truck had to be towed to shamrock Ford in dublin after each incident and no replacement vehicle was offered. After being fixed the 1st time there was a noticable lack of power and fuel consumption increased, leading to the second failure. I am very frustrated that the 40,000 dollar "dream truck" I purchased is a pile of unreliable junk. I bought a 5th wheel trailer to use with this truck and it is so unreliable that I am afraid to tow it anywhere. …
Fuel filter failure resulted in high pressure fuel leak that flooded the engine compartment with diesel fuel. Approximately 10 to 12 gallons pumped from tank at high pressure, and sprayed all over engine and engine compartment. Problem was not noticed after picking vehicle up from routine service. Noticed pungent odor which intensified as I was driving home. Dealer stated they did not service fuel filter. When vehicle was picked to be returned to the dealer, diesel fuel came spilling off the top of the engine. Diesel fuel has penetrated the ventilation system and got all over front suspension parts removing paint from these parts. Failure of fuel filter and resultant leak could have resulted in a fire, thank god it did not happen (note- fuel leak was occuring while I was driving home). Will be happy to discuss this issue via telephone to give more details.
Consumer states he has put 6 fuel pump on his truck since 1999. He also states that the first pump lasted approx 40,000 mile, the 2nd on e lasted up to 60,000 miles, and the rest of them he cannot remember. He states that the last pump was put on nov 19 or 20th and lasted only 10 days. He stated too, that when the pumps goes out his truck stops and if he is on the mountain or on a hill, he cannot break or stop the truck because of the weight that he carries. He carries steel and it is heavy. He states that this is scarry, and nobody seem to be able to help him.
