I have had repeated problems with my '99 Dodge Durango that started with the engine light going on in September 27, 2005 and is now the need for a new cpm. The car intermittent stalls while riding down the road at 55mph or after idling at stop light & turning left (power steering goes out and car blocks intersection/traffic) - "no bus" appears on mileage, everything shuts off. Seems to happens on days when the environmental temperature exceeds 75 degrees and disappears once car has sat (wherever it stalled) for 20-30minutes. No diagnostic code appears when put the car is put on the computer and I was advised by more then one dealership that the problem had to get worse and produce a code before dealership or anyone else could diagnose the problem. …
Without any warning, and on 3 separate occasions my 1999 Dodge 4x4, Durango completely shutdown while driving. After the first incident, w/the ABS and engine light on the vehicle was taken to a Dodge dealer for service. It was found that a speed sensor needed replacing, this was done. Approximately 4 days later while driving on new york ave. In washington dc, the Durango again completely shut down, on this occasion and subsequent ones, no warning lights were shown, no evidence was given that vehicle was about to shut down. On the last occasion sept 17, 2003 it again shutdown while driving approximately 45 MPH on leesburg pike in falls church va. Unlike the other 2 occasions this time it would not restart, although the engine attempted to turnover. It had to be towed, where it is currently undergoing another diagnosic, currently I am awaiting a call from the service technician. …
I've been complaining of abnormal noises coming from my 1999 Dodge Durango since May of 2003, to 2 different Dodge dealer service departments. The steering is "loose" and the tires wear unevenly no matter how many times I have them rotated. After a very scary road trip where I almost veered off the highway several times, I brought the Durango to a private mechanic. They immediately detected the problem of faulty ball joints and a bad rear axle and differential. When the mechanic called Dodge to order parts, he was told that this is a common problem with Durango's and the parts were in stock. Repairs consisted of new upper and lower ball joints, new front tires (with alignment) repair and rebuild rear axle and differential. This was all paid for by me personally because my extended warranty expired in June 2005. …
Durango has given transmission problems including high rev before shifting, and rough shifting in general.problem will always occur if allowed to idle for a few minutes before resuming movement. Has appeared to slip on occasions. Pinion broke with vehicle in no apparent strain with very slight acceleration on take-off- caused major rear end damage as well as ruining one rear axle. Contacted Dodge concering problem since part broke was 1.5 inch thick steel which broke so smoothly, it appeared to have been cut. Part should have been with vehicle 50 years from now when it is in a junk-yard! Was informed that since vehicle was out of warranty, that nothing could be compensated for. Fortunately, this did not happen on the open road, or my wife and children could have been injured or killed. I feel Dodge should at the very least reimburse us for this problem as well as the transmission woes!
Tl contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. While driving 50 MPH, the ABS and brake lights illuminated. The dealer stated that the control module failed and they replaced it on two occasions. Approximately six months later, the check engine light illuminated and the dealer stated that the transmission output sensor failed. They made the replacement. Approximately one year later, the reverse light and rear power windows were inoperative. The dealer installed a neutral safety switch. The failure mileage was 30,840 and current mileage was 72,000. The consumer stated when spoke with mechanic at superstition they informed her that the problem was the emission coil which controls the spark plugs. Updated 10/24/07 updated 12/12/07
The right rear window motor had to be replaced since it abruptly stopped working. But the real problems are with the car all of a sudden dying while driving normally on the road, causing the power steering and brakes to fail making it almost impossible to steer out of harms way if you find yourself admist a lot of traffic. Once the car dies it usually starts right back up again after a few minutes, but it has become so unpredictable that I'm afraid to take the vehicle back out on the street! The milage now is at 48000 and the problem started occuring at around 40000 first rarely but now more frequently.
Transmission went out suddenly. We noticed it making a whining noise when shifted into reverse. This stopped when shifted into drive. After approx. Two days the noise stayed in drive. Changed the fan belt and checked other minor things. Read manuals and suspected trans trouble, took it in and it needed to be rebuilt. The pan was filled with pieces of metal. We also had to have the left upper ball joint replaced at 55,548 miles, this was going on a long time and caused significant tire wear.
Vehicle was purchased on August 21, 1999. The ball joints were same type as those on recall for year beginning 2000. Two years and four months later the ball joints failed. The front passenger side power window had broken along with the two back power windows. There was also a cracked serpentine belt, the tensioner had frozen, the throttle body was dirty and the gasket was leaking.
The consumer had to replace several tires due to worn upper and lower ball joints. The consumer experienced the same recall problem as the 1998-1999 models. The right front and left windows were inoperative, there was noises coming from the serpentine belt, the vehicle had taken too long to crank after sitting for a while and the intake manifold leaked oil.
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that the two rear driver and passenger windows would just fall down on their own. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and who advised her that the actuators failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.
