Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2000 Chevrolet Silverado owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
While applying brakes from low speeds, the ABS system failed. As a result, the vehicle crashed into a building. No injuries were reported. The drivers side window had difficulty going up and down, the brakes were mushy, there was grinding in the rear due to rotor delamination, the door lock passenger side was inoperative, and the brake pedal goes to floor.
Dt: 2000 Chevrolet Silverado was purchased new and after 36 months the warranty expired, the driver's side door locked, and would not open. They were all power locks. Driver's door could not be opened, it would not unlock with the keyless entry or the key itself. Took vehicle to a dealer, who said there was no way they could repair the problem because they could not get the door open. They suggested cutting the door off, and they would sell consumer a new door. Did not contact GM because consumer's father worked for GM, and could lose his job if there was a complaint. Vehicle was purchased under employee discount. After about a month or 6 weeks of driving when taking key out of the ignition there was a sound from the driver's side door-it sounded as if there was a piece falling from the door. Currently, the door is unlocked and will not lock manually, with key or power. …
Dt: the contact stated doors will not open from the inside. The locks were electrical, and the window had to be rolled down to open the door from the outside. Has been in contact with the dealer. They informed him that he would have to order another handle for the vehicle. The vehicle was not under warranty and no repairs have been made. The outside door handles malfunctioned. When pulling them out to open the door and they stayed out. When getting into the truck and closing the door it locked automatically. With the outside handle out the door will not unlock electrically or mechanically from the inside. The only way to get the door unlocked was to open the window and push the handle in. If the window failed to open the contact would be trapped in the vehicle. Manufacturer refused to fix or replace the handles.
While washing vehicle I stepped on tailgate to exit cargo box area and both tail gate support straps snapped. Tailgate dropped ,and I hit my head on tailgate and then fell onto the ground. The gentleman waiting to wash his vehicle came to my assitance and helped me get up. After the incident I was off work for four days due to back injury and head injury. When I went to dealership to buy replacement cables for tailgate, no mention of any possible defect or recall was mentioned and I paid for replacement cables. Replacemnt cables were the newer type that is suppose to solve the problem. Possible lawsuit is pending based on the fact that this was a know problem, my vehicle has been serviced at purchasing dealership since new and no mention of this possible problem was every mentioned during numerous serviceings.
Rear passenger doorts on Chevy Silverado extened cab do not lock completely in temperatures below 30 degrees until heat is distributed in the cab. Have been unable to get an explanation from any general motors experts or resolve the problem. I contend that it occurs because both the top & bottom latch's are made of plastic/pvc material which presents a poteial safety hazard if weight is applied against the doors, hit by another vehicle etc. The indiacated date below is only one of several days since 2000.
Tailgate cables broke while standing on tailgate loading materials-no injury (July 2003). Left front day time running light blew and burnt the socket. Have seen numerous other same models with same problem (2001). Back passenger doors on the extended cab do not fully lock during 30 degree weather and below until the interior heats up. (dec-feb 2000-2004) left front wheel hub bearing is defective after 38,000 miles. (dec 2004)
1. Passenger side doors (front & extended cab door) do not shut tight. The ex-cab door does not lock when shut, it must be closed several times before closing. If it does not close tight, both doors will fly open. 2. Wind whistles inside from the unsealed doors.-- 3. Drivers side door, wind whistles in due to not being able to be shut sealed tight.-- 4. Trailer hitch will not close. The lock is stuck in an open position.
Type : vehicle year : 2000 make : Chevrolet model : Silverado make : Chevrolet; model : Silverado; NHTSA campaign id number : 04V129000 component: structure:body:tailgate:hinge and attachments [redacted] both tail gate cables broke. Called Chevy and was told not covered under recall.
The driver side tailgate cable broke, and the passenger side tailgate cable was hanging by some threads. Also, passenger door will not unlock, and there was a delay in acceleration. The tailgate cable was replaced with the same type that failed. The fuel gauge was not working properly. The fuel sender/ pump unit and actuator had to be replaced.
ABS module bad, no antilock brakes, the ABS light on dash is on constantly. Dealer says part is $800 and only availaible at GM. Same with fuel pump/sending unit, $350 only availiable GM, steering column knocks, both support cables on tailgate bad although recall coming too little too late, and the throttle body sticks are closed.
NHTSA investigations
Tailgate cable breakage
During the pe, odidiscovered that one or both of the tailgate support cables can break due to the effects of metal fatigue at the point where the cable flexes when the lift gate is opened and closed. Concurrently, the strength of the cable degrades over time due to corrosion of the wire strands in the support cables.when the vehicle is stationary and cargo is being loaded or unloaded, the tailgate can tip downward…
