On October 2, 2026, I was loading my dogs into the cargo area of my new 2026 BMW X3 x drive with the power liftgate fully open. The liftgate closed and struck me on the head. I was not touching any control. The gate was stationary before it descended, while I was lifting my 2nd dog into the vehicle. I went to urgent care immediately and required stitches. I also reported nausea. Ten days later, on October 12, I still had severe head pressure, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and brain fog, and I was diagnosed with a concussion at the emergency room. I was told to limit screen time and reduce my workload and have had to cancel work travel and meetings. I am seeing a concussion specialist. I believe the liftgate should have an obstruction-detection or pinch-protection system that stops or reverses the gate when it meets resistance. It did not prevent this injury. …
Vehicle: 2025 BMW X3 Complaint Description: I am reporting a serious safety defect involving sudden unintended acceleration, braking abnormalities, steering looseness, and electronic system failures. Within days of purchase, the vehicle began experiencing infotainment system freezing and electronic malfunctions. Over time, steering looseness and abnormal brake behavior developed. These issues were reported to authorized BMW service centers but were not corrected or properly documented. On May 17, 2025, while the vehicle was stationary and in park, it suddenly accelerated without driver input after a passenger exited the vehicle. I attempted to brake, but the vehicle continued forward and collided with a stone structure, causing injury. BMW later claimed driver error based on post-collision data but ignored extensive pre-collision defect evidence. …
On May 26, 2025, after I arrived home and parked my 2025 BMW X3, the vehicle caught fire approximately 30 minutes later. The fire started due to a known recall issue (NHTSA Recall No. 25V202) related to the electrical/starter-generator connection, which can cause overheating and fire. I contacted BMW multiple times before the incident - on April 19, May 9, and May 25 - requesting help to fix the open recall, but they failed to take action. The fire was sudden and violent, putting my life and property at risk. Firefighters and police responded; case number: 25/200048976. I filed a claim with Progressive Insurance and have photos and documentation available.
I was driving through a green light through an intersection and a car on the opposite side of me had a yield green which they were suppose to wait for me to go and then continue with their left turn, but instead the driver decide to just go and our vehicles collided. The other car, which was a toyota corolla, had damage to their passenger side in which the front bumper looks like it got detached but the airbags were deployed. On my BMW, my entire grill, structural bumper beam, front crumple zone, radiator, driver side beam and bumper were all pretty much destroyed. My hood is dented inward and the insurance company has filed it a total loss. However, due to the extensive damage on my front, it is questionable on why my airbags didn't pop out, at least even on my driver side. …
Supplemental Update - Manufacturer Response to Safety Complaint (BMW) I am submitting this supplemental update in connection with my existing NHTSA safety complaint regarding my BMW vehicle. Following my report that the vehicle continued operating without the key present while transporting minor children, BMW of North America acknowledged the concern and indicated it was under review. However, BMW has now stated that it is closing my case file without: Conducting any inspection; Issuing written findings; Providing a safety explanation or analysis; or Confirming whether the reported behavior is a defect, system failure, or normal operation. BMW has conditioned further assistance on dealership inspection while simultaneously closing the manufacturer-level case, creating a gap in accountability and preventing meaningful review of the safety issue at the corporate level. …
On 8/11/2026 at 26,039 miles, BMW of Mt. Kisco (NY) replaced the engine starter under safety recall B121026 (RO #123380). On 8/29/2026, 331 miles later, the vehicle failed completely. It would not start, displayed an "engine starter faulty" message, and could not be shifted out of park into neutral. The vehicle was completely immobile and had to be towed to the dealer. The dealer's repair order states the technician connected a battery charger, found BDC (body domain controller) faults for the starter motor, and performed a battery reset and BDC reset, after which the vehicle started. No root cause was identified and no parts were replaced. The battery was subsequently load tested and found normal, ruling out low voltage as the cause. …
The contact owns a 2023 BMW X3. The contact stated that after purchasing the salvaged vehicle at an auction, the contact became aware while attempting to register the vehicle, that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V438000 (Electrical System). A dealer was contacted for the recall repair; however, the dealer informed the contact that the part to complete the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact had not experienced a failure.
