On 12/5/2025, while driving my 2025 BMW X3 at approximately 35 mph on Milwaukee Ave (IL Route 21) during rush-hour traffic, the vehicle displayed a "drivetrain malfunction" warning and immediately lost propulsion; the engine completely shut down. The vehicle could not be driven under its own power and remained stopped in traffic with a minor child passenger present, creating a traffic hazard and risk of being struck (including rear-ended). Ambient temperature was approximately 12 F and we were stranded for about 2 hours awaiting a tow. The vehicle was towed and is currently at Knauz BMW (Lake Bluff, IL) and is available for inspection. The specific failed component/system is UNKNOWN at this time This is a repeat event. …
The operating system is yielding extremely poor results. After purchasing the vehicle, the operating system wouldn't remember the settings for the selected driver and would randomly changing settings. At one point, the turn signals on the vehicle stopped working because of the issues with the operating system. This is a direct violation of safety laws and effectively deemed the vehicle undriveable. The vehicle was serviced by the dealer, at which point they stated that there was a communication issue in the vehicle and that it was solved. The vehicle then performed well for about six months, but is now exhibiting the same issues, but manifesting in different ways. One example is where the displayed speed of the vehicle on the dash doesn't align to GPS speed readouts, and the value changing between startups. …
I started to pull forward from a pharmacy drive-through at an intended low speed (approximately10/15 mph) for a right turn onto a driveway. The car was on auto-hold and in drive gear. When I turned right, the vehicle went into a full throttle acceleration and continued until impact. Brakes were totally ineffective. A TWO-LINE BRIGHT YELLOW MESSAGE FLASHED IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, "TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION". There was no automatic braking or forward collision function. I made a hard left turn in about 40 feet to avoid a shopping center parking lot. The vehicle continued until colliding with a concrete filled bollard and an automotive electric charging station. The vehicle charging at this station was also struck. My vehicle fell back, landing on its right side. The driver's airbag and both side curtains deployed. …
*Rear differential bolt and bushing failure two times in less than twelve months. Rear drive making loud banging noises. Vehicle not able to drive. Vehicle rear drive failed as vehicle was in motion. *If I was traveling at high rate of speed, this could have cause the vehicle to lose control. *Problem was reported to dealer and fixed the first time. The second time the dealer refused to fix the problem. *Vehicle was inspected by dealer and I was blamed for the bolt and bushing failure, with no proof of any fault or abusive driving. *No warning lamps or messages were alerted to warn of any danger or damage to vehicle. *First Incident was January 14th, 2025. Second incident was August 28th, 2025.
On April 26, 2025, while driving my 2022 BMW X3, the vehicle suddenly emitted smoke and caught fire. Fortunately, all five passengers, including myself, were able to exit the car before it became fully engulfed in flames. The car was destroyed and is a total loss. The BMW app later displayed a "drivetrain malfunction" message, which did not appear until after the fire had already started. The vehicle was still under the manufacturer's 48-month new vehicle warranty and had no open recalls at the time. Routine maintenance and service had been performed at authorized BMW dealerships. I am concerned this fire may have resulted from a manufacturing defect, especially in light of similar reports and recalls involving fuel rail cracks or leakage in this model/year. No injuries were sustained, but this was a terrifying and traumatic incident, and I am now left with significant financial loss. …
The contact owns a 2022 BMW X3. The contact stated that while pulling into a parking spot, the vehicle experienced hard braking and then stalled. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and the battery was replaced. While driving 25 MPH in heavy traffic after retrieving the vehicle, the vehicle vibrated abnormally and abruptly stopped in the middle of the road. During the failure, the transmission independently shifted to neutral(N). The gear shifter was shifted back to park(P) and the vehicle was restarted. The vehicle was later towed back to the dealer who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,000.
This technical failure in the BMW B58TU engine (2019-2021) involves the variable-displacement oil pump's internal thermoplastic slide. In low ambient temperatures, the high viscosity of cold oil creates mechanical stress that causes this plastic component to fracture. The Safety Hazard The primary risk is a sudden loss of motive power. When the slide fails, oil pressure becomes unregulated or drops entirely, triggering an immediate "Drivetrain Malfunction" or engine shutdown. Immobilization: Vehicles may stall in active traffic or high-speed environments without sufficient warning. Environmental Risk: Failures peak in extreme cold, leaving occupants stranded in freezing conditions while awaiting recovery. …
My vehicle is subject to an active safety recall (NHTSA #25V-636) issued in September 2025 involving the engine starter. As of today, no remedy has been provided by the manufacturer. Due to the safety risk associated with this recall, I do not feel safe operating the vehicle and have been forced to keep it parked and unused for an extended period of time. This has caused significant financial hardship, as I am still required to make monthly loan payments, maintain insurance, and cover related expenses for a vehicle that is unsafe to drive. The issue has effectively rendered the vehicle unusable. The manufacturer has failed to provide a repair, replacement, or timeline for resolution. This situation places my safety and the safety of others at risk, as the vehicle may fail to start or function properly without warning. …
