What owners report
Problem is that the display says "passenger restraint malfunction" -- which brings safety concern. Upon online search, it is likely caused by design flaw of passenger occupancy detector. Here are some reasons why it is design flaw (i.e. not just individual failure) 1. There has been a recall for the same problem for earlier year models (2006-2007 etc). It seems the other years have the same problem (previous recall wasn't a complete fix) 2. There is actually a third party electrical device online that bypass passenger occupancy detector (so that the car thinks passenger seat is occupied all the time) -- which indicates the commonality of the problem because it even became a profitable market.
Intermittent, but frequent failure of seat occupancy sensor on front passenger seat. Appears to be related to occupancy weight sensor. As sensor is not functioning properly, passenger airbag is being unsafely deactivated, leading to lack of airbag deployment if a front end collision were to occur. Problem is reproducible, but has not been taken to dealer, nor has it been inspected. Warning alert displays, then turns off, then returns frequently while the front passenger seat is occupied.
A malfunction of the front seat occupancy mat will prevent the passenger air bag from deploying in the event of an accident and displays a malfunction warning. This malfunction has been the subject of several BMW NHTSA recalls but so far none have been issued for this vehicle.
My front passenger airbag seat occupancy sensor mat will intermittently malfunction. At times, the front passenger airbag will turn off, even with a passenger in the seat. If this were to occur, during and accident, with deactivation of the front passenger airbag there is increased the risk of injury or death.
While driving in heavy tragic, smelled something burning, went to pull out of tragic and felt my [redacted] on fire, the heat seater burned a hole in the seat and melted seat cover to my pants causing much discomfort and ruined jeans. Reported it to BMW and they offered to disconnect the electricity to the seat. Not satisfied, not impressed. Very dangerous. Vehicle was on highway when incident happened. Was lucky to get out of tragic to exit. While driving put my hand to feel problem and burned finger tip.
There is an active recall campaign 08v-384 for defective front passenger airbags that will not deploy and protect the passenger occupant in the event of a severe accident. The active recall campaign which is extended for 10 years only covers model years 2004-2006 of the BMW X3 despite the first generation of the vehicle being produced from 2003 - 2010 and vehicles from all other years exhibiting the same symptoms. For instance my own vehicle is model year 2009 and exhibits all symptoms of the air bag issue as described in the recall campaign notice however I have no matter of recourse and have been unable to petition the dealership or BMW north America llc to remedy the issue as they have refused citing the recall campaign makes them liable only for those specific model years which is ridiculous since this is a serious safety issue and is not receiving as much attention due to the …
After turning on the driver's seat heater, it defaults to high, the left side seat bolster started to smoke. A few seconds later before my wife realized what was happening she felt her left arm and side getting a lot hotter than the rest of her seat. The seat heater then immediately burned a hole through the leather seat while my wife was driving down a city road.
While driving my 2008 BMW X3, the driver side heated seat was turned on, than shorted out, burned through the protective layers, a stinky smoke created, melted my leather seat, and partially burned my jeans and leg. Due to the year and miles on the vehicle, BMW would not fix any of the parts.
