What owners report

On May 26, 2025, after I arrived home and parked my 2025 BMW X3, the vehicle caught fire approximately 30 minutes later. The fire started due to a known recall issue (NHTSA Recall No. 25V202) related to the electrical/starter-generator connection, which can cause overheating and fire. I contacted BMW multiple times before the incident - on April 19, May 9, and May 25 - requesting help to fix the open recall, but they failed to take action. The fire was sudden and violent, putting my life and property at risk. Firefighters and police responded; case number: 25/200048976. I filed a claim with Progressive Insurance and have photos and documentation available.

2025 X3 · May 2025 · fire

I am reporting an unresolved safety recall (NHTSA Recall Number: 25V202) on my 2025 BMW X3 (VIN: [redacted] ). The recall is related to a defect in the electrical connection between the starter-generator and the positive battery cable. This could lead to engine stalling while driving, or in extreme cases, a fire due to overheating and smoldering. The defect creates a serious safety risk to both driver and passengers. I purchased this vehicle under financing, and I am still making monthly payments while being unable to safely use it. There is currently no remedy available, and BMW has not provided a timeline or solution. I am afraid to drive this car due to the potential danger. I am requesting urgent action from NHTSA to escalate the resolution of this safety issue.

The vehicle is under an open fire risk recall involving the starter system. The manufacturer has not provided a remedy. The dealership confirmed that parts for the few vehicles BMW claims are repairable are backordered until 2027. This means there is effectively no fix available. The vehicle is equipped with Remote Start, which activates the starter while the vehicle is unattended. This increases the risk described in the recall and makes the manufacturer's only interim instruction ("park outside") even more difficult to follow in winter conditions or in areas with theft/vandalism concerns. The manufacturer responded to an inquiry but did not provide a remedy, timeline, or meaningful interim safety guidance. The response did not acknowledge the hazard of a potential electrical fire in a garage with a gas line. …

2024 X3 · Jul 2026

My vehicle is part of recall # 26V438 (starter motor issue.) My concern is that the delay in resolving this is causing me to take the precaution of NOT parking my vehicle in my (attached) garage due to potential for fire. The concern here is that as we move into the colder months here in the northeast, a far-too-common problem people have is rodents (mice, squirrels, chipmunks) crawling up into the engine area and making nests - and sometimes doing severe damage to wires - in cars not parked in garages. I have the ability to park in a garage, but am disinclined to do so due to a potential fire being caused by the unaddressed starter motor issue. BMW has known about the starter motor for months, but seemingly there is still no remedy available. I am requesting that this be expedited. Thank you.

Mileage: 31,694 (bought [new]) The engine starter intermittently fails to crank the engine and, per an open manufacturer recall, presents a fire risk while the vehicle is running. On multiple occasions the vehicle struggled to start during normal use. There was no crash, no injury, and no airbag deployment. To isolate the issue I contacted my authorized BMW dealer three times 07/01/2026, 07/16/2026 & 07/27/2026; on each call I was told no recall remedy is currently available and to call back in approximately one month. The vehicle remains subject to the open starter recall with no repair available. No relevant aftermarket equipment is installed.

On April 26, 2025, while driving my 2022 BMW X3, the vehicle suddenly emitted smoke and caught fire. Fortunately, all five passengers, including myself, were able to exit the car before it became fully engulfed in flames. The car was destroyed and is a total loss. The BMW app later displayed a "drivetrain malfunction" message, which did not appear until after the fire had already started. The vehicle was still under the manufacturer's 48-month new vehicle warranty and had no open recalls at the time. Routine maintenance and service had been performed at authorized BMW dealerships. I am concerned this fire may have resulted from a manufacturing defect, especially in light of similar reports and recalls involving fuel rail cracks or leakage in this model/year. No injuries were sustained, but this was a terrifying and traumatic incident, and I am now left with significant financial loss. …

The contact owns a 2022 BMW X3. The contact stated that while pulling into a parking spot, the vehicle experienced hard braking and then stalled. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and the battery was replaced. While driving 25 MPH in heavy traffic after retrieving the vehicle, the vehicle vibrated abnormally and abruptly stopped in the middle of the road. During the failure, the transmission independently shifted to neutral(N). The gear shifter was shifted back to park(P) and the vehicle was restarted. The vehicle was later towed back to the dealer who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,000.
