What owners report
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 MPH, the third-row driver's side window suddenly shattered causing shards of glass to enter the vehicle. The cause of the failure was not determined. No object had contacted the vehicle to cause the failure. The local dealer and manufacturer were not yet contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 41,000.
On Friday, 2/10/17, our 5 month old Sienna was driven into our secure garage and parked. Nothing was out of the ordinary. On Sunday, 2/12/17, the van was found with the right side rear glass exploded on the ground and inside the vehicle. The van had not been touched by anyone. I have home security camera footage confirming that the glass was intact when parked and that nobody other than myself had set foot in the garage during the time in question. Only by chance had I positioned our children's car seats to the left side of the bench seat and the seats were not occupied at the time the glass failed. Otherwise I would have been removing glass fragments from my kid's lap, face, ears, eyes mouth, etc.. I feel very lucky but have little confidence that this will not happen again. …
Bought the car, new, a little over a month ago. 3 miles on the odometer at the time of purchase. Have driven the car under 800 miles. Car has been covered, in our driveway, since May 20th. Came out yesterday (May 30th) to move it. Uncovered it and found the crack along the lower section of the windshield. It was not there when I covered it on the 20th. There is no evidence of "chip or damage" just the crack (which was not there when the car was covered). Car was stationary, in our driveway on a private, gated street, covered. Concerned that there is a faulty design issue and that will happen again. Scares me to think it could happen when I'm driving with others in the car. Toyota is not taking responsibility. They have told me to bring it in for "evaluation". The dealership is 45 minutes away, and I do not think it is safe to drive.
Sunroof glass exploded on me and my kids on mid morning of 5/9/2019. No other damage to vehicle. The temperature was around 85 degrees. The glass is shattered with no way of utilizing the sunroof at this time. The vehicle was stationary at the time of the incident.
Sunroof spontaneously burst on June 6, 2018, around 7:25 pm, my family and I were heading home a store, going north on mo-65 at about 65 MPH in springfield, mo. Just south of battlefield rd, we heard a loud "pop" sound. We thought our daughter had hit her metal thermos against the back window. When we arrived home, however, I heard a crackling sound and traced it to the sunroof, which was shattered (like a spider web) and bulging at the top. Since then, as of 9 am the following day, it has continued to bulge more, with a couple of small pieces of glass having popped out onto the top of the glass. It has not yet collapsed into the car, but I am leaving the sunroof shade closed so the glass doesn't fall into the cabin. Of note, the weather was mostly sunny, temperature around 80f. The sunroof was closed, as was the sunroof shade. Traffic was fairly light immediately around us. …
In January 2021, while sitting in the driveway an eight inch crack appeared in the middle of the windshield. The windshield was replaced in September 2020 after purchasing the vehicle as a repo. The windshield that was replaced was cracked the entire width of the glass in the exact same place where the new crack has appeared. The vehicle was taken to the repair shop and it has been determined that there is not enough support for the windshield built into the frame causing the damage to reappear. Since then the crack has continued up the windshield and is now approximately 14 inches.
Went to car parked for three days - sunroof shattered outward. 4/7/17 not the first time - on. 8/25/14 it shattered while driving (7978 mileage)- a loud explosion and no other cars in sight. Also exploded outward. Opened a case with Toyota relations who asked we bring to dealerships for review. First time technician blamed on object hitting us from road - Toyota paid for replacement as good will gesture. Now technician say someone punched it from below with cover closed - have pics below. Also stated had to be broken from within - basically accused us of punching it. After the first time we keep cover closed and never use it for fear it would happen again.
Driver's window seal comes detached when window retracts and you cannot put window backup using control button as sensor detects interference \ resistance and automatically retracts window to open position. This creates a dangerous situation when driving as its a major distraction to the driver as the seal hangs loose and can interfere with unobstructed viewability of side mirror. In inclement weather this is a real driving hazard. Temporary fix is to pull up on window seal and push back into position estimated first time problem noticed. Sorry for slow reporting just found this website to report problem.
