NHSTA SAFETY COMPLAINT TEXT Safety defect and Incident Chronology: I am reporting a catastrophic, recurring sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) defect originating strictly from a forward idle state, culminating in a severe bidirectional runaway and property damage crash. This vehicle utilizes an Electronic Throttle System-intelligent (ETCS) that failed to trigger a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) , Check Engine Light or fail safe limp mode during all three events. Previous odi 10576595, 2 April 2014/ today 25aug2017: at approx. 1910-1915 hrs I was driving south on bell ave. Approaching hurley ave, in sacramento, ca., when for the third time I have experienced vehicle acceleration while braking. The second time, I was driving in the late evening, 2200, to the movies; approaching arden and fulton, same thing, braking and the vehicle accelerated almost hitting the vehicle in front of me; that time my actions of standing on the brake and turning off the ignition key kept me from hitting the other car. This second incident happened maybe 2 months ago! I considered that maybe my sandal got caught on the brake pedal, which is why I did not make an immediate report! Now I know for sure that it is and always has been a tautly problem with the braking, engine rev/acceleration problem! Toyota denies that this problem happens with the Solara! …
Purchased 2005 Solara 11/5/04. Had mva on sunny, dry day in rush hour traffic. I applied brakes at about 45 MPH and the car did a 360. I hit a concrete barrier and spun around and hit water filled barriers on the opposite side of the expressway. The car did not stop until it landed in mud. Toyota examined car and said they found nothing wrong with the car. To this day I still have problems with the brakes. I had $9500.00 in damages and 2 dislocated knees. I hit no other car and no one hit me...not going fast at all. I am still driving the car although I am afraid but I have no other option.
On March 6, 2016, moving west on a residential street at about 20 MPH 10:45 p.m., less than 500' from home. Crystal clear night. Car freezes, steering & brakes lock, car lurches forward and keeps much higher speed. With both arms, I pulled car from head-on with utility pole to very high palm tree. Head-on ith tree, airbag releases, white smoke coming from hood. I turned car off, took keys, car engine continues as did horn blowing & white smoke. It took three aaa trucks to remove car from tree trunk, with steering and brakes still locked. Car was alone on a neighborhood road moving west, driver alone, very residential with people walking dogs, pilots and stews running, joggers and pups and cats prowling. No one was around. A guard from a gated community on the street's north side was the 1st to appear. Eventually 4 poloce officers were there, one talked to me often.
Exited freeway and hit brakes to slow and stop at traffic light. The motor accelerated, the brakes were too weak to stop the vehical, and I crashed into the stopped car at the traffiic light. It seemed that the cruise control did not turn off when I pressed the brake pedal. They failed to turn the cruise control off.
Dt*: the contact stated while applying brake pressure at 10 MPH through a parking lot, the brake pedal went all the way down to the floorboard, and there was a loss of all braking power without warning. The vehicle continued forward motion striking three nearby pedestrians who sustained serious injuries to the upper and lower extremities, and crashed into a building. There was moderate damage to the front of the vehicle. The police were alerted, and a report was taken. The vehicle was inspected by an independent repair shop, who was unable to duplicate the problem. Afterwards, the braking problem persisted. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who was unable to duplicate the problem as well. The manufacturer was alerted.
