Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2007 Nissan Titan owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
The rear differential and axle has an inevitable failure with no warning lights or much anything else besides some possible noises! The vent designs are terrible it causes overheating and internal turmoil over time seals start leaking, bearings and internal gears Get weak from over hot /cold repeated cycles allowing moisture to build and accumulate in the 3rd member where it's supposed to be completely sealed and dry other then gear oil to lube and maintain proper function. My personal and current experience is I'm without my truck, missing work and very . Very thankful that it didn't lock up on the highway/freeway that I drive too and from work about 85 miles daily! The best part is there's no fast cost efficient resolution! …
My 2007 Nissan Titan le 4x4 has experienced (3) rear axle shaft seal failures in addition to (3) front axle shaft seal failures all within about 20,000 miles of each other. The rear axle seal failures are a safety concern to me. The differential fluid leaks directly onto the rear brake rotors which causes a reduction in braking ability. It is clear after some research that this is a very common issue with multiple model year Nissan Titan trucks. Nissan should address this issue and offer a permanent solution so we would not be faced with this safety issue in the future. My first rear axle shaft seal failure occurred at 56,672 miles on 6/9/14. I had another fail at 62,930 on 11/4/14. The third on 8/23/15 at 75,000 miles. The front axle shaft seal failures occurred at 53,139 on 3/20/14, again in October 2014 (mileage not available), and then at 65,105 miles on 1/21/15. …
The rear axle seals on my 2007 Nissan Titan continue to leak gear oil. I have replaced the seals three times including purchasing and replacing the entire axle shaft, seal and spacer assembly on the third time. These were 2 axle shaft assemblies which cost me over $1000. I have also installed a breather tube on the rear axle and insured it is allowing air to get in and vent the rear axle. It's been a few months after installation and the seals are leaking again. My rear brakes and parking brake are soaked with oil and the parking brake no longer holds the truck in place when parked on a incline/decline.
I recently bought a 2007 Nissan Titan and I love the truck. I was driving along and I started smelling brakes burning, I pulled over and my rear passenger wheel was smoking. I looked on the back side and rear end dope was on the back of my wheel. The wheel seal has went out. Come to find out looks like the rear differential has been sealed up before. So, its a problem with the Nissan Titan rear end seals and differential seal. It creates a safety hazard getting on the brakes. The wheel could catch on fire.
My rear differential has failed under normal operating conditions, almost causing me to wreck. Apparently, this is not a new issue with these trucks. I was driving 50mph when the rear end made a pop and I lost the ability to drive.
This is now my 5th replacement axle seal and or bearing, I cant believe Nissan hasn't been made to correct this ongoing issue, yes they replaced the first one but it has been mine to replace ever since.
There is an ongoing failure of rear axle seals and bearings in our 2007 Nissan Titan. This results in the slip and brake light burning continuously as well as the rear axle leaking oil. We have had this replaced twice under warranty but it keeps happening. They were changed at 34,712 and 58,205 miles respectively. The lights are on and they are leaking again at 75,209 miles. There is a Nissan technical bulletin on this problem with 2004-2007 titans. We contacted Nissan and they will not cover a problem out of warranty though it is a manufacturers defect. It appears to us they put cheap repairs in while under warranty and now that the warranty has expired they want their customers to have to pay to fix their design flaw correctly. We have called Nissan corporate about this problem and were given a case number and they were going to investigate and let us know if they could help. …
Had transmission serviced and about 5000 miles or less later truck started hesitating and finally stopped. Investigated and found transmission fluid and antifreeze under truck. Had towed to nearest ammco station and they diagnosed problem as antifreeze in transmission smelled burned and said a complete re-manufactured transmission was recommended since all of the transmission components had been exposed to the anti-freeze and were burned or overheated. Talked with Nissan of gastonia nc. And they stated they could install a new re-manufactured transmission and radiator and external after market transmission fluid cooler for 5,100 dollars with a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. They said they had a large number of frontier, xterra, and pathfinder problems with the internal transmission cooler inside the radiator failing allowing anti-freeze to leak into the transmission and destroying it. …
Rear axle seal leaked on drivers side at 66,000 miles. Gear oil all over brakes which is a major safety concern. No modifications - truck is full stock. Nissan dealer database reveals this issue happened also at 29,000 miles and entire rfd was replaced under warranty for previous owner. Now happens again at 66,000 miles. I am told there is a TSB for this issue, but since vehicle is out of warranty(6,000 miles ago) that this is my problem. Dealer told me that this problem could very well have been going on without my notice for longer than 6,000 miles. A little research reveals this to be a very common problem with these trucks. Nissan needs to acknowledge that they have a faulty design in the rfd, and they need to step up and issue a recall for this issue due to it being a major safety concern!
Rear axle seals leaking on 2007 Nissan Titan 4wd pickup with 23,500 miles. Rear axle grease was leaking onto wheel and rear brake disk... Potentially causing a failure of the brakes to stop adequately, had I not found the leak as quickly as I did. I understand that this is a frequent failure on the Nissan Titan. Nissan replaced the seals under warranty with identical seals. I did not keep the old parts. Here is one link to a forum that is tracking axle seal failures among its members: http://www.titantalk.com/forums/Titan-engine-transmission-drivetrain/42837-rear-axle-seals-leaks-please-report.html there appears to be 350 Nissan Titan rear axle seal failures reported on this one website alone since August of 2008.
