Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2024 Honda Odyssey owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
The contact owns a 2024 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that upon coming to a complete stop, the vehicle began to hesitate and idle abnormally rough. Upon resuming driving, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was able to duplicate the failure. The dealer deemed the failure a possible misfire. The contact was informed that the dealer had duplicated the failure in other vehicles. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 9,000.
The contact owns a 2024 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while at a stoplight, the auto idle stop feature malfunctioned, and the vehicle failed to immediately restart after releasing the brake pedal. On several occasions, the vehicle had to be shut off before restarting. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The contact was informed of the NHTSA Action Number: EA25004 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING); and related the failure to the campaign. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 8,500.
The contact owns a 2024 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while stopped and using the Auto START/STOP feature, the vehicle failed to restart as designed. While attempting to restart the vehicle, the battery warning light flashed on the instrument panel. The vehicle restarted after several minutes. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 41,000.
The start stop system has failed to restart at a busy traffic light more than half a dozen different times after a 1 hour drive. Short drives do not bring this issue out. This got me stuck at a light, drivers annoyed honking and confused as I try to get my vehicle to start again. Turning the van completely off and back on again seems to get the van to restart again. I tried bring the issue up to the dealer when I brought it in for its first service, but the employee was extremely rude/belligerent and stated they would only do an oil change when I asked for help with this safety issue among other things. Will take to another dealer next service interval and try again. No issues known or warning lights on the vehicle prior. The van when it did this, error'd stating failure to restart or something along those lines. It happened so fast I don't 100% recall. …
The van has trouble restarting. This can appear as both a sluggish restart and a complete failure to restart. The van has failed to restart both during quick stops like refueling and during the auto-stop feature at a stop light. When this happens, the driver must completely shut off the van and restart, which is a safety issue when stuck while blocking traffic. The van is having the starter replaced for a second time after the dealer determined the starter was failing. The starter was replaced in 2025 under warranty because the dealer determined the starter was failing. There are no warning lamps, but the starting does start to slow down over time. We missed the slow down the first time until it failed to restart because the onset is gradual. We only noticed the second time because we'd already encountered the issue. …
With the auto cutoff engaged when stopped at a red light, the vehicle shut off on its own. I had to put the vehicle in park and try the push button start a few times before the vehicle turned back on. I had to put my flashers on because the light turned green before I could get it restarted. Someone had to swerve to avoid me. I was almost rear ended because the intersection I was stopped at was near an interstate offramp and the driver did not recognize I was stopped. I took it to a Honda Dealership and they said they could not replicate the problem but that there was a bulletin identifying the issue and that the bulletin had been withdrawn. I was told that it likely meant a recall would be coming in the future. The following message came on when the vehicle turned off: Shift to park. The red battery dash light was on.
My 2024 Honda Odyssey has repeatedly failed to restart after the Auto Idle Stop system shuts the engine off at a red light. When I release the brake or press the accelerator, the engine does not restart as it should. The vehicle then shifts into Park or instructs me to place it in Park, and it is difficult to restart using the start button. This has left the vehicle disabled in an active traffic lane and creates a serious risk of being struck by another vehicle. I have been stuck at a red light with people honking at me and haven't been able to start the car for up to a minute. The problem is intermittent, and I do not know whether it is caused by the engine, electrical system, battery, starter, software, or power train. The Auto Idle Stop system should not shut the engine off if the vehicle may be unable to restart.
I am submitting this complaint regarding a serious safety issue with my Honda's Auto Idle Stop/Start system. On multiple occasions, while stopped in traffic or at an intersection, the Auto Idle Stop system has automatically shut off the engine as designed. However, when I release the brake and attempt to proceed, the engine fails to restart. The vehicle becomes stalled and immobilized in the middle of active traffic. I have been stuck at traffic intersections because of this failure, creating a significant safety concern. When the vehicle fails to restart, surrounding traffic expects the vehicle to move when the light changes, while I am unable to accelerate or safely clear the intersection. This creates a risk of a collision, particularly from vehicles approaching from behind.
Vehicle is idling rough. Took to dealership and they said it has an obvious misfire. Over a total of six days they had it and performed diagnostics that were requested by Hondas Tech line. The dealership told me that they were informed by Hondas tech line that is just how that vechile is. I got referred to Hondas corporate and spoke with them. I was then requested to bring the vehicle back to the dealership for further testing. They had it less than 3 hours. And again I was told that the vehicle misfiring is just a characteristic of the vehicle. I'm concerned about my vehicle misfiring and Honda not wanting to fix it. I don't want to be driving down the road with my family and have an engine failure. Issue has been ongoing for a few weeks
The Auto Idle Stop (AIS) feature on our 2024 Honda Odyssey EX-L has recently failed to restart engine leaving driver and passengers stranded in heavy traffic at intersection traffic lights. This has occurred twice, once while traveling alone, once while traveling with five year old child. Safety put at risk because driver had to exit car in middle of road during rush hour traffic while cars attempted to go around. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by dealer. Had battery tested at auto parts store and results indicate battery in good condition. Vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives. There were not any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure.
