Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2008 Ford Fusion owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
Unintended acceleration while slowing down (rolling with my foot feathering the brake) to park in a stall at my local post office my 2008 Ford Fusion instantly accelerated jump the curb crossed the sidewalk and hit the building. The car continued to rev spinning the front wheels until I shut it off with the key. I verified there is nothing blocking the pedal and the floor mat is secure and clear of the accelerator. I had my foot full hard on the brakes and was unable to stop the car. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
The problem initially began because I had to brake hard to avoid an accident on the freeway and the brakes failed. After restarting the vehicle the brakes went back to normal. A week later as I was driving down a street, I braked normally to pull in to a business parking lot and the brakes failed almost completely. The pedal went down to the floor and would not stop the vehicle in a safe distance. Also, they had a spongy feel. They would not properly grip until I turned the car off and then on again. Had there been another vehicle in front of me I would have hit them, or if this happened on a local freeway here in houston, tx it could be potentially fatal. After researching the problem, I learned that many other individuals have had the same exact issue. The problem appears to be a faulty ABS modulator.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the passenger side air bag casing lifted and was separating from the dashboard without warning. The vehicle was taken to three independent mechanics, but was not diagnosed or repaired. While driving approximately 60 MPH with the cruise control engaged, the contact depressed the brake pedal and the vehicle lunged forward. The speed increased to 70 MPH without warning. The failure recurred on three other occasions. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or diagnosed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000. The VIN was unavailable. Updated 09/03/15 updated 10/26/2017
Tl contact owns a 2008 Ford Fusion. While driving 69 MPH with the cruise control engaged, the contact tapped the brake pedal and the vehicle accelerated. He depressed the brake pedal again with greater force, but the vehicle accelerated again. In addition, the engine revved and the rpms increased. As a result, the contact rear ended another vehicle. Neither of the vehicles sustained major damage and there were no injuries. Through research, he discovered that this was a common failure and believes that a recall should be issued. The vehicle has not been inspected by the dealer or a mechanic. The VIN was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 21,000.
While driving the vehicle lurched, lost power. Wrench lit up on dashboard. Had to pull off road, turn off car. Waited 5 minutes, proceeded with drive. No further incident occurred. Took to dealership and was told the repair would exceed in excess of $900. Was told the PCM or throttle body needs to be replaced.if there is a known issue with an extended warranty but not our VIN number, why was that warranty not extended? And what about all the people driving these cars with this problem has anyone been hurt yet? If Ford doesn't want to pay for the fix they should at least give people a warning regarding the issue.
1. Came up to a red light and pressed my brake. Fusion immediately speeded into the intersection through the red light. Fusion acted like it was possessed. I was struck by oncoming traffic. Fusion was totaled. 2. Happened week earlier, was going to report it next oil change week away. 3. Nothing, car scrapped by insurance co.
Tl contact owns a 2008 Ford Fusion. While driving 60 MPH, the vehicle accelerated on its own. The contact struck a curb to stop the vehicle. Prior to the failure, the engine revved higher than normal. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 300.
I started my car and it sounded & seemed normal. However, after driving less than 2 miles, my engine suddenly decelerated and the rpms dropped dramatically. I tried to accelerate and it would not increase speed. I was able to get off the road safely. I had to have my car towed. The mechanic determined that the problem was due to a faulty power train control module which impacts the ignition coils and the estimated cost of repair is $2100! One of my ignition coils was melted. Ford has issued a technical service bulletin on this issue, however, they do not deem this a safety issue! Cars that just stop running or decelerate quickly is most definitely a safety issue. I can think of many scenarios where this issue would cause injury or perhaps even death. …
Tl * the contact owns a 2008 Ford Fusion. While driving at approximately 60 MPH, the contact engaged the accelerator and the pedal moved from under her foot and pressed itself against the floor. The contact engaged the brakes harder but the vehicle continued to accelerate. After approximately 1 minute, the accelerator pedal released and the car drove normal. The failure happen three more times and the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the dealer advised her that the cause of the failure was the floor mat. The service manager test drove the vehicle but could not duplicate the failure. The contact did not feel safe driving the vehicle since the dealer could not duplicate the problem. The failure mileage was 28,874 and the current mileage was 28,934. Updated 6/19/10 the consumer stated the accelerator pedal would go to the floor, but it wouldn't come back up. Updated 07/
My car wouldn't accelerate, then my check engine light comes on. Within 20 my car completely shuts off. Had to tow it to a mechanic, to tell me the computer system in my is burning up the coils in my engine. I called the dealership to see if there was a recall on this, and there was not. In fact as I look on the internet I have similar stories about the exact same problem. I told the dealership that and there was nothing they could do. Also on this site I reading how some of them the dashboard curls up, mine is also doing that. I bought this car brand new, just paid it off and this happens. I even finance through Ford, you think they would try to help.
NHTSA investigations
Accel Pedal Interference - Acc Floormat
Unsecured mats may interfere with accelerator pedal return to idle. A heel blocker in the floor pan provides a platform that may lift an unsecured mat into contact with the pedal. Ford introduced new pedals as a running change early in model year (MY) 2010 vehicles. Analysis of complaints received by ODI and Ford show elevated rates of pedal entrapment incidents in MY 2008 through early 2010 production vehicles.
