I have a 2000 Ford Expedition. Last June, just after having the car serviced, I noticed my general grabber tires delaminating and coming apart. I immediately called my local Ford dealer and was told there was no recall on the tires, but to save any receipts when I purchase new tires in the event there is a recall. I replaced the tires and saved the recept. I received a recall notice from Ford later in the year. When I called them they said to bring the vehicle in. I explained that I had replaced the tires. I was told my claim was with continental tire, not Ford, and that continental would be contacting me. They never did contact me and I finally had the opportunity to call continental tire with a phone no. Given to me by Ford. Continental tire now says that the recall is over and there is no way to recoup my expenses. I need your help. …

My wife was driving our 2000 Expedition on the freeway at 60mph when the tread separated on the right rear tire, causing a blow out and an accident, almost causing a catastrophic rollover. I am fortunate she was not killed. What irritates me the most is general tire has a reputation for this problem, especially here in arizona, and the consumer has no idea. These tires were not worn and were properly inflated, and the only legal recourse I would have against general tire would have been if my wife and infant child had been seriously injured. I am incensed about this as the only reason general will get away with this is due to the fact my wife's driving skills saved her life. My opinion is general and Ford continue to deceive the public about the safety of the product they are putting on the road, and there is no repercussion for their negligence.

Left rear tire and rim came off while driving at 60 MPH and pulling a small utility trailer, causing an accident. The trailer was severly damaged. The tire, which apparently left the vehicle when several lug bolts sheared off, was retrieved undamaged from a field near the road. The tire had not been removed from the vehicle since it was manufactured. Photos of the accident, sheared lug bolts, and resulting damage are available. This occurred while en route to a youth mission trip in south dakota with six people in the vehicle. There are many witnesses to this accident which clearly appears to have been the result of a manufacturing defect or engineering flaw similar to that encountered with 1997 and 1998 expeditions.

The spare tire which is mounted under the body of my 2000 Ford Expedition fell off while I was on an entrance ramp of an expressway. Fortunately, the errant spare tire did not hit the cars behind me. The tire was held by a steel cable that broke. This is a very serious safety issue that needs to be addressed, and not swept under the rug. The local Ford dealership would not fix it without payment. I notified the corp customer service department for Ford. Got the runaround, and was told that they would forward to the engineering dept. I know that this same issue happened to a friend of mine. This is a real safety issue.

Dixie donelson had only purchased her Ford Expedition the month prior (early June), and was just underway for a trip to visit her daughter in colorado. The original police report documents her losing control of her vehicle within the first 40 minutes of her trip. Further observations of the crash site have revealed tread remnants of new Firestone SUV tires. However, the Expedition caught fire and all remaining tires burned to the extent of not being identifiable. Dixie had told her duaghter she had new Firestone tires, but we have had little success in determining the actual tire model.( dot number: tire size: (unknown) )

While traveling south on I-95 at approx 65 MPH, the passenger right rear tire failed. It appears that the failure mode was tread separation/detachment. The tread ended up wrapped around the rear axle. At the moment of the failure the 2000 Ford Expedition torqued hard to the right, but control was maintained. Further information on this incident is that the failed tire was a replacement for a recall (NHTSA campaign id number: 02t012000) by continental tire co. And replaced by a Ford dealership. The failure of the replacement tire fits the exact description as stated in the NHTSA investigation report.
