The contact owns a 2014 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated while driving at 5-10MPH, he blacked out and the vehicle crashed into a tree on the front passenger's side. The driver's side curtain air bags were deployed; however, the driver's air bags failed to deploy. The contact exited the vehicle through the passenger side independently. The contact's roommate transported him to his residence. The contact later sought medical assistance and was informed he had sustained a broken nose and broken ribs. The vehicle was towed to a body shop where it was totaled. A police report was filed. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and sent an EDR report to the contact. The contact became aware that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V024000 (AIR BAGS), which he associated with the failure. …
The contact owned a 2014 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while the daughter was driving approximately 70 MPH the daughter lost control of the steering causing the vehicle to roll over and crash into a ditch. During the crash, the vehicle sustained severe front-end damage and was destroyed but no air bags were deployed. During the crash, the driver sustained a concussion that later required medical assistance. A police report was taken at the scene and the vehicle was towed away. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was contacted regarding the incident. The contact indicated that the vehicle was previously serviced under the NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V024000(AIR BAGS). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced that same failure listed in the recall. The Local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 130,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact was involved in a head-on collision, however the air bags did not deploy. The contact sustained a concussion and was transported to the local hospital for treatment. The vehicle was towed to a local tow yard. A police report was filed, however the report information was unavailable. The contact stated that the police report was undergoing amendment due to missing information. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 165,000.
I was in a car accident .A woman failed to yield at a stop sign and rammed into the front of my car at a high accelerated speed. I was restrained but the right side of my forehead hit the rearview mirror .causing two huge knots on my head. My eye glasses also smashed into my right eye and I had a cut above my eye .I was thrown to the right passenger seat area , my right hip hit the gear shift and my knees and hip , were bruised. Apparently the seatbelt failed as well , but my main complaint is that the airbags failed to deploy. I suffered damage strain and bruising to both hands, the left was worse , I was made to wear a brace . I was taken to the ER via ambulance . One of the officers assumed I wasn't wearing a seatbelt , which was not true at all . He thought I hit the windshield but I did not , it was the mirror . …
On March 12, 2025, I was involved in a frontal collision when another vehicle unexpectedly pulled out in front of me. Impact occurred to the front-left area of my vehicle. Despite the nature of the collision, the front airbags did not deploy. The vehicle is subject to Safety Recall 20TA03, which addresses incomplete or non-deployment of airbags and/or seat belt pretensioners due to ECU susceptibility to electrical noise in certain crash scenarios. The vehicle was declared a total loss by my insurance company and is no longer available for inspection. The manufacturer was notified in May 2025 and again in November 2025. The manufacturer closed the case citing inability to inspect the vehicle and later relied on photographs only to rule out airbag deployment concerns. No warning lights or messages related to the airbag system were observed prior to the collision. …
My daughter was driving a 2014 Corolla with just over 100k miles and T-Boned a truck that pulled out in front of her. She was doing 30 mph when she hit the truck and the airbags did not deploy. Unknown damage cost due to it is still under investigation by the opposing insurance company. Lucky, my daughter was not seriously hurt. It appears to be an on-going problem for the Toyota cars with the airbags not deploying properly in a crash but something needs to be done before more people die due to faulty equipment.
We was on Highway and a Buck jumped out , my passenger was freaked out knowing no Air Bags deployed. I was escorted home by police and Contacted Toyota ,they sent a [redacted] to come take my sensors off the car and Never contacted me again, told me to sign into Toyota page and they'd get back to me. Now my car just sits Smashed in Garage, it was in great shape before and I was gonna trade it in.
Takata inflators (possible) the car was in an accident. My wife rear ended another vehicle and there was a good amount of front end damage. She was not sure about the exact speed. She was driving on interstate 95 in west haven ct in clear weather but fairly heavy traffic. The thinks the speed was between 25 to 35 MPH. The damage it the front end was enough to declare the car a total loss. The damage went all the way to the engine block. Most of the airbags did deploy. The drivers side steering wheel and knee airbags deploy, however, they did not inflate. The side airbags and curtain airbags deployed but only some inflated or partial inflated. I spoke to the dealership where I purchased the vehicle and they said it was strange. So I reported it to Toyota and they are going to inspect the vehicle. …
Driving my new first lease a small Corolla and turning right into work... A third row big old SUV doing at least 35 MPH or faster rear ended me and pushed my little car into a big decorative boulder and almost pinned me so I couldn't wiggle my way out of the window. Not one airbag went off and it was not a minor or slow impact. Weeks later I unfortunately gently tapped a parked van making a turn for a stop signal and every single airbag (ones I didn't even know were in the car) went off and the insurance company deemed it a total loss. I was lucky to not have been injured in the first accident, however, I feel there was a malfunction with the deployment of the airbags and I could have been. Toyota also came after me for $1,700+ dollars as the lease was only 7 months in and I didn't even pay the taxes I guess. …
Tl* the contact owned a 2014 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated while making a right turn, a large SUV travelling at approximately 35 MPH rear ended his vehicle. The contact stated no air bags as he was pushed into a big boulder. The contact was not aware if any warning light was illuminated. The contact stated sought medical attention for unknown injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a collison repair facility for the body damage. The contact stated he did not contact a dealer or manufacturer to have the air bags failure diagnosis. The contact stated shortly after the repair, approximately a month later he rear ended a vehicle and all air bags deployed. The insurance adjuster deemed the vehicle a total loss. The contact stated he did not contact a dealer or manufacturer in regards to the air bags deployment. …

Air bags › Air bag/restraint control module
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon, and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles. During certain crashes, the air bag electronic control unit (ECU) may malfunction, possibly disabling the deployment of the air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners.
Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ECU and install a noise filter between the air bag control module and its wire harness, as necessary, free of charge.
NHTSA investigations
Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited.
Electrical overstress
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation to determine if the failure of airbags to deploy during severe crashes, in certain vehicles, was the result of a safety related defect. During the investigation a complex failure was studied that can result in non-deployment of subject vehicle air bags and other restraint system devices in severe crash events.
