Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 1995 Toyota Camry owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
My car is hard to steer when I go around curves on the street of the mountains where I live. It feels as if I could drive right off of the mountain if I don't quickly correct the steering. It is as though it is slipping and accelerating as if I am losing control of the car. It is a frightening feeling as if it is pulling against what I am trying to do, such as turning the steering wheel to make it around curves safely.
Tl contact owns a 1995 Toyota Camry. While driving at any speed, the vehicle shook, vibrated, and the steering wheel pulled all the way to the right. The failure caused the front driver side tire to wear unevenly on the inside. The contact had to continually have wheel alignments and replace the tires. The vehicle was taken to the dealer five times concerning the steering. Immediately following the alignment, the steering still pulled to the right. The purchase date was unknown. The current mileage was 114,000 and failure mileage was 50,000.
Car has been swerving violently around curved roads. The alignment was thrown out of specification by broken coil springs. All other components such as ball joints tie rods wheel bearings... Were found to be within spec. Coil springs were both found broken, and unevenly. One coil was missing more coils than the other. If the coils had broken in a different place or there had been traffic a fatal collision could have occurred.
Consumer states of having problems with the steering wheel which made her loose control of the vehicle causing her to get into a car crash .dealer was notified as well as the manufactory and there is also a recall out for the same problem but the manufactury states that does not include her vehicle because of where the vehicle was manufactor.
I asked Toyota to explain why rack & pinion needed replacement with only 18,300 miles on car. Car was brought to dealer because of steering problem. Toyota written answer was that car was over warranty period of 36 months and it was now my responsibility. I had the rack & pinion replaced in November and then received a recall from Toyota on dec 2, l999 that said a loose nut on the steering wheel had to be tighted and should be brought in to the dealer. The systems described by Toyota were the symptons about steering I complained about when I took the car to the dealer.
99 v 307 000/ manufacturer's recall # sscx06 concerning steering wheeel: before repairs were done there was a clicking in the steering wheel. After repairs done steering wheel started to vibrate. Dealer, thomasville Toyota, thomasville, ga; phone# [phone] notified, and informed consumer that it was okay. Asking NHTSA help in this matter. Feel free to provide any further information on this matter.
The defective steering rack and pinion causes the car to not respond properly (directly) to turning the steering wheel. The Toyota dealer told me that teeth in the rack and pinion system have broken. The situation is particularly dangerous going into a curve in the road.
All components of the power steering system have failed. The rack is leaking in 3 places, the pump is leaking as is the hose. Toyota will not help pay for this ($2500). Why did this system fail in its entirety on a car that has been completely maintained?
