What owners report

In the morning where I live for the last few days it has been below 0. The Outlander PHEV even when plugged in over night will start the gas engine and drive for about one minute until the gas engine shuts off and comes up with a message saying power reduced with a turtle symbol. When it does this you have no heat (HVAC) the heated seats and heated steering wheel does not work as well as the front and rear defrost. The car speed seems to be limited to about 40MPH. This issue is not news as many PHEV owners are dealing with the same issue, From my understanding Mitsubishi didn't install a battery warmer on the new generation Outlander PHEV however the prior generation Outlander PHEV did have a battery warmer and there were no issues with that model in cold climates. …

The vehicle exhibits an intense, overpowering raw gasoline smell inside the passenger cabin, specifically originating from beneath the rear seat area. When the climate control/AC fan is turned on, raw fuel vapors are siphoned directly out of the dashboard air vents into the faces of the occupants, causing headaches and dizziness. Two independent mechanics have pressure-tested the fuel lines and confirmed there are no liquid fuel leaks, proving this is a structural vapor siphoning defect. Mitsubishi has documented this exact factory defect under TSB TS-25-13-001 (NHTSA ID: MC-11018002-0001), but the local dealership refuses to perform the safety repair without a massive out-of-pocket payment because the vehicle has 87,000 miles. This is an immediate fire and health hazard for anyone inside the vehicle.

We (driver and passenger) were pulling into a parking lot and going very slowly about to stop and get out of car. Suddenly and unexpectedly the car accelerated out of control and at an abnormal speed. the air bags deployed, smoke filled the cabin. After the police arrived and the car was towed, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company took title to the car. We were lucky to survive because the car ran into a cement wall from the sudden acceleration and went up into the trees and then backed down and hit the ground. There was a police report and the car was inspected by a manufacturer's representative. Earlier in the day there was a warning on the dashboard that said the vehicle needed maintenance. The "black box" of the car was analyzed by Bosche Co. But, we would like an independent agency to review the black box of the car and get an explanation as to why this possibly happened to us. …

1) 12/20/2024: Took the car to a Mitsubishi dealer as the 'Check Engine Light' was ON for a few days. They erased the code but could not diagnose the cause. Returned home and could NOT charge the car using the same standard outlet (level 1) I used since I bought the car. The instrument cluster displayed the following (Please see Pic 1): a) Error message 'PHEV System Fault, Service Required'. b) Check engine light. c) Forward Collision Mitigation System [FCM] OFF warning light. d) Rear Automatic Emergency Braking [Rear AEB] system OFF warning light. e) Plug-in hybrid EV system warning light. Since 12/20/2024, I have been driving the car with these serious safety issues. 2) 1/2/2025: 'On-board charger' was replaced by the dealer. But the same error continued. Per dealer invoice, they "performed drive cycle pattern 3 and the code returned". …

This vehicle exhibits a severe and dangerous acceleration hesitation, accompanied by a sudden, momentary loss of engine torque when pulling out from stops or trying to merge onto highways. This unexpected loss of power leaves the vehicle stranded briefly in oncoming traffic, creating an immediate crash hazard. This failure matches the exact physical defect and symptoms detailed in NHTSA Recall 16V563000 (Mitsubishi Campaign SR-16-006). The dangerous safety defect is actively persisting whether the remedy was already completed or not (Mitsubishi states that my vehicle is not included in the recall-this is not true-which will be explained in more detail at the end of this description. In a good-faith effort to resolve this dangerous hesitation, the transmission valve body was recently replaced out-of-pocket, but the identical recall symptoms remain entirely unchanged. …

2016 Outlander · Jul 2026

Respectfully, we bought our brand new 2016 Outlander from the dealership this May. My wife rear ended a car less than a month later on the highway. She said the car didn't stop when she hit the brakes and that the brakes don't work. The car was repaired by geico for $20K damage paid and she said she wasn't driving it anymore. She had multiple injuries from the airbags and saw the doctor. After repairs, we ended up switching cars and the Outlander became my car and I noticed that it seemed very heavy like it was surging forward and resisted stopping. Two months later I changed the oil on the other car, so I asked her to take the Outlander just for the day. She didn't want to drive it, but I said just be very careful. …
