Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
While driving about (35) MPH there was a metal sound like, something broke and at that moment the vehicle went all over the road and it was tottaly uncontrollable. Braking ability was only on the front wheels. The vehicle hit a curb and dirt wall.
Owner states that she had work done on her brakes 5 times until she had total brake failure, causing an accident. She is unaware of the type of braking system she has, but she notes that vehicle does not stop.
Master cylinder failed resultingin an accident; also replaced front brake rotors; vehicle hesitates/bucks on acceleration and has fast idle; also, horns inoperable and replaced both rear hatch struts.
I have had to replace 3 brand new batteries which were still under warranty, because they were totally drained. I believe there is something wrong with the electrical system. There is nothing that I have done that should have caused the batteries to die. The blower on the air conditioner/heat doesn't work and the dealer states that they can't find anything wrong with it. The cover of the passenger side airbag is prying up from the dashboard. I have had the brakes replace 2 times all ready and now all the rotors are warped and need to be replaced. I think this vehicle make has very serious defects and after reviewing other consumers problems. I'm very glad that I plan to sell mine very shortly.
Problem has been on going for 2.5 months. Dealer has had car for over a month and has been unable to diagnos or cure the problem. I've spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars on fixes that they have recommended. None have worked and their corporate has not given me any support in this matter. When the failure occurs the car's engine shuts off with no warning. Power steering and brakes go out rendering the vehicle a hazard to myself and all other drivers around my on busy hwys. If there is any assistance that your organization can provide me I would greatly appreciate it! Tks for your time and consideration.
Engine completely failed at 75000 miles. Records kept and maitained according to manufacturer. They would not replace it. I had to 1300+ to get it fixed. Now I have been told I need a new head gasket and I know it had been replaced 2 times since I have had it. I am having major problems with the brake system. I have had 2 new sets of rotors put on, rotors turned numerous times and it still shakes badly. Need to have them recall this problems, cause everyone I have talked to has the same problem.
Sunroof does not close completely by motor, and need allan wrench to close it; power door locks do not work; window glass rattles and is loose at weatherstrip; fuel vapors smelled periodically, particularly on hot days; horn works intermittently; A/C compressor bearing failed; burns oil (mechanic said needs valve job); brake rotors overheat constantly, causing vibration during braking. Have had them resurfaced numerous times and replaced once.
Rotors on the vechile continue to warp because the brakes are overheating. Rotors and pads have been replaced at least (6) or (7) times since purchasing the vehicle on 7/8/95. Calipers, rotors and pads replaced on 2/21/96 at 34,000 miles.
On normal road conditions when applying the brakes there is a grinding noise like metal touching metal. The vehicle also shakes. Brake system has been replaced (4) times on one side within the last year and a half.
Poor ABS performance. During vehicle operation, when the brakes are applied, the vehicle pulls to the right then to the left. Also the brakes lock up, causing the vehicle to come to a complete halt or stop.

The headlamp support panel can develop a fatigue crack where the anti-lock brake system (ABS) hydraulic unit is attached, allowing the hydraulic unit to fall down.
Remedy: Dealers will connect the ABS hydraulic unit attachment point at a rigid portion of the headlamp support panel with a bracket and reinforce the headlamp support panel by adding a back plate.
