What owners report

On the 476 near philadelphia, my 2000 Mercury Mystique chugged and continued to lose power as we carefully pulled over to the side of the rode. There was almost 1/2 tank of gas at the time. After about 2 minutes we started the engine back up and continued on with our trip. Fifty miles done the rode, it happened again. After two minutes we restarted the car and were able to drive to our destination without incident. I must add that this incident happened two times before (when the car was fairly new and under warrenty) when the gas was at 1/4 and 1/8 of a tank respectively. We vowed never to let the gas get below 1/4 again. We were told by a mechanic that on a turn the gas probably shifted and because it was low the gas did not get through to the engine. This time (aug. 22) it happened with a half of a tank of gas with very heavy traffic. We were very lucky not to have had an accident. …

Tl contact owns a 2000 Mercury Mystique. The contact experienced engine hesitation, loss of power, and surging in her vehicle. She would lose all power and have to wait a couple of minutes before the vehicle would restart. The contact could only drive five miles before the failure recurred. The failure occurred when the engine was warm or hot. She took the vehicle to a local garage and they stated that the fuel pump was defective. The current mileage was approximately 56,000 and failure mileage was approximately 55,600.

I recently bought a 1999 Mercury Mystique. At 68,900 miles the fuel pump on the car failed. I was in the process of getting it fixed and my mechanic showed me the old fuel pump after he'd removed it from the car. The ground wire was basically fused to the side of the plastic which my mechanic assured me should not be the case. I was told that it could have caused an explosion at any time. I will be lodging a formal complaint with the Ford/Mercury company as well but I thought that anyone else who owns a car of this type should know about this danger as well.

1999 Mercury Mystique, second owner, purchased is 2005. The gas line freezes when the temperature reaches below 20 degrees. The tank is half full, treated for winter weather and it still freezes. This is not normal: I've owned 2 other vehicles (Ford tempo/Dodge stratus) never happened. I've missed work due to this gas line freeze and am the only resident in my neighborhood that is having this problem. It has to be a manufacture defect or the gas tank is not protected. This is the second winter season this has happened.

Recall on a fuel filler neck valve for a 98 Mercury Mystique, gas being unable to flow freely into gas tank, spits gas back out on you. August is the first time I knew there was a recall. Ford says my VIN # wasn't on recall , but the part is defective anyway.( dangerous ) occurs everytime you try and put gas into car. They put a canister vent valve on which was not the problem. They kept the old part that was good. Problem is fuel filler neck valve.

1998 Mystique · 83,000 miles · Aug 2010

Unable to put fuel into car. Fuel kicks back and overflows onto the ground. If you refuel slowly you can get about 3 dollars into car in about 15 minutes. Usually end up with more fuel on the ground then in the car. Additionally fuel ends up in the rear wheel well of the car, concerned about gas on rear wheel well in case of a rear end accident.

1998 Mystique · Storage › Tank assembly · Jan 2000

I first started smelling fuel after fueling up my car. Then later I noticed that fuel leaks out from under my car when I put fuel into it. I recently noticed it running out from under the car when I just happen to fill up at a gas station that was on an incline. I took the car to a dealership and they said that the Ford recall #99s24 does not apply to my car. But.... It is what problem is. Help please.
