Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2015 Jeep Patriot owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated that while driving at 35 MPH, the front driver seat headrest was deployed without warning or impact. The headrest hit the back of the contact's head which caused pain to his head, back, and neck. The contact did not seek medical treatment. The dealer was initially contacted and he was given an estimate for the repair. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000.
My vehicle's driver side headrest deployed for no reason at all. This happened approximately August 2024. I'm the only person who drives this vehicle. I went into my car and to my surprise I noticed that it had deployed. Since I wasn't driving the vehicle when it deployed , it must have happened when the vehicle was parked in my driveway. November 11, 2024, I brought my vehicle to a repair shop to replace a crankshaft sensor and while the vehicle was there I asked them to reset the headrest. They said that they could not reset it and that the headrest would have to be taken apart in order to fix it and that it would be expensive to fix. So since the headrest was not my priority at the time and I didn't want to spend a lot on it, I told them to not fix it. They also said that Chrysler "might" recall the headrest in December 2024 so to bring it back to them once there is a recall.
Drivers headrest deployed while vehicle was in my driveway overnight. I could have been injured or it could have cause an accident if the headrest deployed while driving. Many other people online have had this issue with their 2015 Jeep Patroit. No warnings provided and despite an auto repair place stating they cannot repair it but they believe there was a recall for this. I have not found one but there should be. Because I was told it was expensive to replace I did not have it repaired when it occurred sometime in early 2024. No police informed since it occurred while parked in my driveway overnight.
My driver side headrest exploded while the car was stationary. It appears the active head restraint system failed. Jeep dealers refuse to tell me if this is covered by warranty. I have not yet had it inspected, but as the car was stationary, not moving and not colliding it is clearly a manufacturer defect. This is an extremely dangerous defect. There are reports of drivers being concussed while driving, and I mostly only drive to take children to and from school.
While vehicle was stationary, driver side headrest deployed. Had I been just a few inches closer to the headrest it would have hit me. I will be contacting a Jeep dealership in regards to this but there is currently no active recalls on the Jeep per the NHTSA website.
Vacuuming vehicle front passenger side, depress lever to push seat back and headrest deployed forward exposing the inside of headrest. Looks like a plastic piece is broken. Can not reset/push headrest back into normal position.
When arriving on Saturday 6/1/2019 at home we parked our vehicle in the garage and when we shut the door we hear a loud popping sound. Not knowing what it was we inspected the outside of the car and then in the inside we noticed that the driver's side headrest had come apart. I took it into the dealership and they had indicated that the headrest had deployed due to the clips inside breaking and that I would need to pay $535 to get it repaired. I thought that safety equipment of this nature was supposed to be covered, as if a air bag had falsely deployed that would be covered. I would think that this would be a major incident as what would of happened if we were driving the vehicle or worse yet what if one of our kids were driving and what happens if the passenger side headrest deploys at any given time. …
In July 2019 I walked out to my car and noticed that the head rest had deployed. My car was not moved or in any accidents. After doing research I noticed that many other Jeep Patriot consumers have had the same problem with the headrest deploying without there being an accident or any type of trans happening to the car. This is very dangerous for the driver as well as the passenger in the vehicle. This can cause a serious injury for those in the car and possible others if it is deployed while someone is driving and an accident is then truly caused. I see there has been no recall on this but there needs to be. The cost of having this being replaced should not be left up to the consumer. Jeep is a well known company and should have to pay. I pray no serious injuries occur to others from this issue.
My driver seat headrest deployed like an airbag without warning or by result of impact. It just split open and dealership told me it was a safety device but it is an expensive job for something that suddenly becomes defective and I shouldn't have to pay for a safety device that failed. I wasn't in vehicle when it happened. But the week before this happened the Jeep was parked due to an extremely horrible snow storm and it was trapped under snow for over a week and where I live that type of weather has not happened before. And the week after it became hot so not sure weather had a role in it. But because I had brain and neck surgery the headrest has made it uncomfortable and it is impacting my safety as well.
The headrest deployed on it's own while driving. I was told bu my wife to take a look at what happened and the plastic that holds the metal bar that locks headrest in place was broken. The metal shaft is still locked in place . Please see pictures. I called the dealership that I bought the car and they told me to call a Jeep dealership. I notified bay Dodge Jeep Chrysler in panama city and have them check for any recalls. They told me no and I get with service department to get a new one. I should not have to pay for defect.
