I am filing a complaint regarding a serious safety malfunction in my 2025 Hyundai Tucson's forward collision sensor, which caused an accident. I have owned this vehicle for only two weeks, and I believe this issue poses a risk to myself and other drivers. On February 25, 2025, while driving, the car in front of me stopped and made a U-turn. There was no imminent risk of collision, yet my Tucson's forward collision sensor erroneously activated and engaged the automatic braking system. This caused my vehicle to come to an abrupt stop, resulting in a rear-end collision. I have documented the incident, including photographs, a police report, and insurance documentation, which I can provide upon request. This malfunction is extremely concerning, as a feature designed to prevent accidents instead directly caused one. …

The automatic emergency braking system activated early and aggressively causing a rear end collision. It is available for inspection upon request. While driving in busy traffic on a highway I was lightly braking to avoid sudden stops or unexpected movements of the vehicle while traveling between 20-30 mph. The vehicle then activated the emergency braking system and came to a sudden and unexpected complete stop. This sudden stoppage caused myself and my passenger to be thrown forward harshly against the seatbelts. Additionally I was unable to steer the vehicle towards the side of the road as the wheel had locked and avoid an SUV that was rapidly approaching my rear. This SUV subsequently rear ended me. The actual collision was minor thankfully due to the low speed of the traffic, but could have been much more severe if traffic conditions had been different. …

No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle resumed normal operation shortly afterwards. The driver manually deactivated the Forward Collision Avoidance system at each startup, but the failure persisted. The contact's daughter then received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V316000 (Forward Collision Avoidance), and the software update was performed at the dealer. My wife was driving our Hyundai Tucson on the city street at about 35 mph. She signaled left to get into a turning lane. The turning lane has two lanes and is very long. She got into the turning lane and the traffic in front of her stopped. The car's collision avoidance system activated and slammed on the brakes even though the vehicle was not very close to the cars in front of her. As a result, a vehicle behind her rear ended her causing over $9,000 in damage. This car has done this before on the highway and city street. The collision sensitivity setting was on normal and had been since we got the car and until the accident. I had also been driving the car when the collision avoidance activated. The problem with this car is that it only knows to slam on the brakes and results in getting rear ended. …
