What owners report
I am writing to report a serious safety concern regarding the "Consider Taking a Break" driver alert system in my new 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited, which currently has 515 miles. This notification is presenting itself in a way that I believe creates a distraction and potential hazard while driving. The alert appears frequently and without clear justification, even when I am fully alert and in control of the vehicle. Rather than enhancing safety, it draws unnecessary attention away from the road and contributes to driver frustration. From a safety standpoint, any system that interrupts driver focus-especially without accurate or consistent triggering criteria-can increase risk rather than reduce it. This is particularly concerning in real-world driving conditions where attention needs to remain uninterrupted. …
I am a tall driver (6'4") and I need to wear sunglasses when driving most of the time. The eye tracking device seems generally incompatible with both of these conditions. When the eye tracker fails to recognize my eyes are looking at road it disables driver assist features such as lane centering which can occur unexpectedly and has almost caused me to wreck once. I have tried without sunglasses and squinting at the glare also causes the system to fail. I often have to lift my glasses and stare at the sensor to make the warning go away (in effect forcing me to take my eyes off the road. If sunlight hits it, it also fails. So in summary, this device does not work in the daytime. …
The vehicle's driver monitoring / Forward Attention Warning system repeatedly gives false inattentive-driver warnings during normal highway driving, even when I am actively watching the road and driving normally. The system does not appear to function reliably with ordinary sunglasses and common driving conditions. The issue happens frequently when wearing sunglasses. The system incorrectly determines that I am not paying attention, despite looking directly ahead at the roadway. When this happens, Highway Driving Assist and lane-centering functions may disengage or become unavailable. This occurs in normal daytime driving conditions and appears overly sensitive to environmental factors, including reflections, lighting conditions, and driver seating position. I typically receive multiple false warnings during a single drive. …
While using Highway Driving Assist/Lane Following Assist on Interstate highways, lane markings frequently disappear on overpasses and in construction areas. When this occurs, lane-centering assistance silently disengages. The only indication is a small dashboard icon changing color. There is no audible warning, steering wheel vibration, or other prominent alert. The vehicle may begin drifting before the driver realizes steering assistance has been lost. Observed repeatedly on Massachusetts highways, including I-495 and I-290. This creates an unexpected and serious safety issue, potentially resulting in an accident. I had this happen during a recent trip, and multiple times the car wandered towards an adjacent lane. It caused me to lose confidence in the system, and to maintain constant vigilance, gripping the wheel tightly at all times. …

Backing vehicle out of driveway and went to engage brakes and they did not engage. began rolling backwards down street with steep grade. Kept stepping on brakes with no response. Had to turn into a parked vehicle to keep from rolling down steep grade and potentially off a substantial cliff. Happened today and dealership said that it may be because the "battery for the brake" had not received a charge from the main battery. Very dangerous and never disclosed. If I had not taken evasive action I could have easily been killed. Car is being dropped off at collision center today but is available for inspection. There were no warnings or other symptoms.
Intermittent Electrical / Brake failure . Put vehicle in reverse . Brakes failed to stop vehicle . Vehicle has had electrical issues before . Waring lights came on for steering and tire pressure in the past . Recall then came from Hyundai for the ICCU .45 minutes before the collision, the front collision warning came on when I was stopped at an intersection with no one in front of me . I stopped the vehicle and turned the vehicle off . Turned on the vehicle and it reset the warning lights and sounds , and I continued to drive . Later while pulling out of a parking space in reverse ,I stepped on the brakes but the vehicle did not stop . I pumped the brakes to no avail . …
12/30/2023 at approximately 5:30pm I drove home with the iPedal engaged. The iPedal was installed as a download to the car in August 2023. My daughter was in the passenger seat. I began to back into my driveway but shifted to Drive to straighten out the car. The car began to roll forward I took my foot off the accelerator but the car did not stop in spite of the iPedal being engaged. I put my foot on the BRAKE PEDAL which went all the way to the floor to no avail. The car rolled slowly into an electrical pole which brought the car to a stop. I previously filed a complaint here but I have since learned that iPedal may disengage if the car is put into reverse. There is not warning light to alert the driver that iPedal is disengaged so the driver is not aware that the brakes may not work as expected. I believe this may have been the case with my accident. …
