During our first trip on the interstate I noticed that when trying to correct the steering, either right or left, the car would not immediately respond. Then after just a second or two something would break loose allowing the vehicle to respond to my request. I.e. Turn left or right! It's as if their is something stopping it from responding until I apply more pressure to my pull. I immediately took it to the dealer, and was told that is the "electronic steering" mechanism and that that is normal, and there is no reason to be alarmed. Over thanksgiving I made a 2,500 mile round trip to indiana (all interstate). During the trip, the same thing!! After stopping for a short period, and then back on the road, I noticed I would have to drive a short distance before it began to act up again. It is very pronounced and obvious on interstate driving. …

I have been driving for 55 years, so I have a pretty good handle on "normal" as it pertains to driving. For the last couple of years I have noticed that the steering on my car "sticks" as I travel on nearly straight roads. It does not seem to pose a safety risk, but is very annoying as it causes the driver to over correct steering when it breaks free of the "sticking". This is not an occasional event, but a continuous, ongoing one. It is not noticeable when making turns. I have never had this problem analyzed due to the dealership costs.

The steering seems to "lock" or stick in position while driving. It sometime takes considerable force to make the steering turn,. The action needed to "break" the steering free causes the vehicle to swerve. At highway speed, especially under slippery conditions, this could cause a loss of control of the vehicle. There is also noise coming from the steering column while turning. We leased the can when it was new and purchased it when the lease was expired, so I know the history of this vehicle. There have been no accidents or damage to the vehicle so far. The vehicle has 32,000 miles on it now. This condition has gotten worse in the last month. Thank you for any help you could give with this.

2016 Azera · 32,000 miles · Dec 2020

This is happened too many times even though in frequent and it is very unsafe when it happens on the open road as the steering will be completely unavailable most likely relative to the eps. No incident yet but that is only because I'm a good driver, but it sure is unsafe and scary and something needs to be done as I've read many online people having the same issue with this vehicle

2015 Azera · Dec 2024

When traveling at speeds above 50 mph, my steering has a dead-spot, on-center. At this steering position when trying to keep the car straight on the road or highway, the steering wheel sticks and requires force to keep my car heading straight.

2015 Azera · Jan 2023

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Azera. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 MPH uphill, the steering column suddenly locked up. The contact was able to pull into a parking lot. After restarting the vehicle, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) warning light illuminated. The contact was able to safely drive the vehicle to the residence. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed with a fractured steering column. The vehicle was not repaired because the replacement part was on back order. The contact stated that a mechanic attempted to move the vehicle, and the steering wheel locked. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 44,000.

2014 Azera · 44,000 miles · Aug 2026

While driving, the steering became suddenly loose and nearly took me off the road. I was able to get the vehicle the short distance home, but the steering wheel now feels broken and detached. There was no warning. The passenger airbag light stays on all the time. I have found that both issues and parts are actually covered in other years, but not mine, which I have confirmed with a local dealer. With only 68800 miles, these should both be fully covered manufacturer repair since they are safety-related and there are numerous similar reports. There was no "crash" or "injury" per the questions below, BUT there should have been, and there was not, only because I was able to regain just enough control of the car to avoid a crash. …
