What owners report
The system in question and failing is the idle-stop engine, start function. The truck is available for inspection upon request. The idle-stop engine has failed to restart the engine several times in traffic and at stop lights. This has created a safety hazard, since even after completely shutting down the vehicle (all power off), it has taken multiple tries to restart. The starter becoming increasingly harder to start each time. The problem has been reproduced by Hagerstown Honda, [redacted] where I purchased and have the vehicle serviced. Vehicle has been inspected by the manufacturer's representative -- Hagerstown Honda. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. This issue began occurring in [redacted], after owning the vehicle just over two years. …
The automatic engine stop/start system is a safety hazard. On multiple occasions with two different drivers (husband and wife owners), the engine has stopped just as the accelerator is pressed after waiting for traffic to clear at a stop sign or while waiting to enter a street from a driveway or parking lot. The delay when expecting the vehicle to accelerate has nearly caused accident(s) several times. Drivers are forced to switch off the automatic stop/start system every time the vehicle is driven since it defaults to active and it is not safe to use. The system should be permanently disabled or at least programmed to be disabled as default when engine is started. This issue was reported to the local Honda dealer during the first routine service--owners were told that nothing could be done by the dealer. The service advisor suggested that we contact manufacturer or NHTSA directly. …
Driving approximately 15mph on a gravel road in my subdivision I noticed smoke or steam coming from under the hood. The time was approximately 10: 30 am on June 4,2026 the 2023 Honda Ridgeline with 41,000 miles was immediately stopped and put in park. I exited the vehicle and started to open the hood and fire streamed out from the front of the vehicle. I backed up and went to the rear door and retrieved my dog from the back seat. The vehicle is a total loss as the fire spread incredibly fast. I'm lucky to be alive today. There were no warnings or messages.
Approximately six(6) months ago, my wife and I noticed a very noxious gasoline smell in the cabin of our truck, and upon further investigation determined that the smell was a direct result of gasoline that had infiltrated the oil in the engine. The oil was changed and the used oil smelled very strongly of gasoline. I sent an oil sample to Blackstone Industries to get the oil analyzed, and they, in fact found gasoline in the oil. Honda said that the results were useless because they wouldn't accept third party results. I took my truck to the local Honda dealership (Napleton Honda in Loves Park, IL) to address the problem. They, in turn contracted the Technician Department of American Honda who said the strong gasoline smell was "NORMAL." I have contacted American Honda and they suggested getting a second opinion. The case number is, [redacted]. …
2022 Ridgeline's Auto Idle Engine Off/On activated while driving/moving. This week it occurred (Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024) on I95 in Virginia when going down hill at approximately 70 mph. The engine ceased without warning and the steering and brake pedal began to freeze up when I had eased off the gas to coast briefly down hill (in order to keep in the flow of traffic). I then gave it gas, pumping the pedal, and a couple of seconds later it recovered and started up; the Truck's starter buzzed loudly as it restarted. I avoided an accident in traffic by not panicking and luckily because the vehicle behind us was not tailgating and that the section of highway was straight and not on a bend - otherwise it could have been catastrophic. The rest of the trip we turned the feature off and the truck had no incidents. …
Vehicle goes into limp mode, limited power, flashing check engine light This happens after extended period on highway (hour or more) below 20 degrees F. When you exit highway and come to a stop. All good as soon as you try to accelerate CEL starts flashing and I have reduced power. To correct this. The vehicle has to be shut off and restarted. This means it happens when pulling out into traffic from a stand still at a stop light stop sign. Limited to about 15 mph regardless of road pulling onto. Then have to pull over shut off and restart put back in drive and go. This is not ideal in most cases and dangerous. Honda released a TSB but will not cover if out of warranty. I filed case with Honda at 70 K. They agreed to pay for parts and labor minus $50 deductible and sales tax on parts. This affect all 2017 to 2023 and some 2024 vehicles with 3.5L engine. …
While making a right turn from a yield sign into oncoming traffic and doing about 15 mph, I depressed the accelerator to speed up and the truck stalled for about 2 seconds. The RPM's drop and you literally lunge forward until power resumes. No warning lights come on and no codes are given. This put my safety at risk and the driver accelerating towards me at risk. This is the first time it happened with my 2021 Ridgeline. However, my 2019 Ridgeline had this happen about a dozen times. Honda Service could never replicate the issue with the 2019 Ridgeline, but there was enough data out there about defective High Pressure Fuel Pumps that they agreed to replace the pump. After replacing the pump, the issue went away. Now my 2021 Ridgeline is doing the exact same thing. I can therefore only assume it's the High Pressure Fuel Pump again. …
Upon exiting or entering the highway, the truck loses power and will not accelerate. This happens after multiple hours of highway driving and seems to only happen when the temperature is near or below freezing. The Check Engine Light (CEL) comes on and is flashing. This has happened to me four times. Three of which were exiting one highway to merge onto another and there was ample room to slow down and pull over. One time was merging onto a highway from a Rest Stop with a great deal of traffic and I was fortunate the shoulder was available to avoid being collided with. The first time was on 11/6/2021 (2200miles), second and third was on 12/19/2021 (5600miles) and last time was 3/9/2022 (10100miles). All occurrences the gas tank had ample gas. Shutting the truck off and turning it back on clears the CEL and no error codes are stored (according to the dealer). …
