Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2014 Honda Civic owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
The contact owned a 2014 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the passenger's side front tire drove over a pothole, causing the driver's side front air bag to deploy. The driver's side air bag struck her on the right arm. The contact slammed on the brake pedal and the vehicle drove off-road, crashing into an embankment that damaged the front end of the vehicle. The contact received medical attention on the scene for cuts and bruises to her right arm. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000. The VIN was unavailable.
The contact owns a 2014 Honda Civic. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was intermittently illuminated on the instrument panel while driving at various speeds. Over time, the air bag warning light remained illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was diagnosed with a defective air bag module. The contact was provided an estimate for the repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 77,600.
The contact owns a 2014 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the air bag warning light illuminated. Upon investigation, the contact learned that the vehicle was equipped with Takata air bags. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed that the driver's side air bag inflator was faulty. The driver's side air bag inflator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 128,716.
While I was driving, a truck hit me from behind causing a 5 car accident. My car was unable to be driven from the scene. The radiator and front collision bar are very bent in, however my airbags did not deploy. The truck was going 60 mph when it hit me hard enough to cause another 3 cars to have damage. This is a potential issue for others and currently I have very bad neck and head pain from the accident. My car had a warning screen saying "check airbag system" after the accident.
The contact owns a 2014 Honda Civic. The contact stated that the gear shifter was significantly loosened while shifting gear. Additionally, the contact stated that the air bags warning light and the TPMS warning light were illuminated. An unknown dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 153,000.
I was involved in a multi vehicle crash on the highway at a high rate of speed, approximately 50mph. I was hit from behind and hit the car in front of me totaling my car. My airbags did not deploy and I hit the steering wheel upon impact and suffered 4 compression fractures in my T1-T4 vertebrae. The doctor stated that if my airbags would have deployed I would not have suffered the neck fractures that I did.
I was in an accident in October of last year, and when my vehicle was hit none of my airbags were deployed. we no longer have access to the vehicle to inspect it. none of my airbags deployed and I don't want that to happen to anyone else. it was inspected by police and by Gerber. and no there were no warnings.
The car crashed into the back of the truck in front of it. The crash caused the airbag to go off and either the airbag itself or the area that covers the steering wheel cut my wife's jaw/throat. She was luck it did not cut her artery or wind pipe she was able to be transported to the hospital and survived.

Very infrequently the airbag light would briefly come on (solid, never flashing). It would only happen when turning the wheel counter clockwise, typically the wheel did not need to be turned very far for this to occur. The light would always go back off and no codes were found. On the night of 12/26/2025, I was driving onto the interstate (turning the wheel counterclockwise) when suddenly the passenger side curtain and passenger seat airbags deployed. My hearing went out, my windows fogged up, and I became disoriented. My vehicle briefly left the roadway and swerved into the narrow shoulder before I slowed down to a near stop. I resumed driving as there were vehicles approaching from behind. The vehicle has no impact damage and has never been in an accident. The airbags had stickers dating back to 2014 from when the vehicle was manufactured. …
NHTSA investigations
Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited.
Electrical overstress
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation to determine if the failure of airbags to deploy during severe crashes, in certain vehicles, was the result of a safety related defect. During the investigation a complex failure was studied that can result in non-deployment of subject vehicle air bags and other restraint system devices in severe crash events.
