Car stalled out (35mph) near end of 200 mile trip. Was diagnosed by king l-m as a fuel pump failure, and replaced at a cost of $507. NHTSA compliant data base indicates a large number of fuel pump failures, and many other complaints (I.e., continued stalling, loss of power, electrical shorting in fuel pump assembly, etc.). I'm beginning to wonder whether you people ever do anything with the data that consumers provide. Don't you realize that loss of power (engine shutdown) presents a major safety risk? Also, Ford has acknowledged the existence of a design defect in this fuel pump (see TSB's # 96-7-5, 95-25-2, and 94-16-3). The most recent tsp suggests that the OEM pump be replaced with a fuel pump of a different design after the OEM part fails. The issue described in the tsp involves "reduced power, hesitation, stalling, and no-start conditions... …
Starting on 3/15, the car would turn off with no warning, both at idle and at speeds of up to 75 MPH. We are left to coast to the side of the road with no power steering or brakes. Sometimes it will recrank, other times it won't. Local Ford dealer has had the car 5 times (has it now) and cannot figure it out. Have replaced fuel pump, crank sensor, cam sensor, water pump, ignition control module and various filters. Until recently, the dealer could not replicate the problem, so we kept the car until it was literally lurching and knocking, barely driving more than a mile at a time, turning off every 100 yards or so. They finally saw it turn itself off. It just goes dead. After several times, we found that there was a telltale "shudder" that occured sometime prior to it shutting off. No real pattern though. …
Consumer called complaining about having problem with the vehicle stalling. Also stated that the vehicle has stall while consumer was driving on the highway. Dealer was contacted and stated that the fuel pump was defective and because the vehicle had no warranty they won't replace it unless he pays for it. Consumer has taken the vehicle that he took the vehicle to a private mechanic and had the fuel pump replace. Also stated that he is aware that there is a technical service bulletin. Ts
Ignition switch failed. Can take key out of switch & engine still going. Had 2 ignition switches replaced due to failure, possibly an electrical short. Also, engine head gasket had blown at 64,000/fuel pump replaced due to overheating, and the air conditioner puts out an odor when running for awhile. Been to dealer each time about problems. Had also notified manufacturer & told nothing can be done.
I bought the car about a year and half ago and right off was having problems with the transmission. Very disappionted because I love my fords I checked the fluilds and kept it up had the gasket replaced. And it still jerks into gear but its an automatic ! What concerns me now my I had my rotars and brakes replaced and my car is still eating up tires too and bouncing all over the road!!
After filling the vehicle with fuel, vehicle was parked, consumer noticed that the fuel spilled all over the driveway. Took vehicle to the dealer, who discovered that fuel tank had a very big crack in it. There are recalls on the fuel tank, recall 97V144000 and 97V145000 were issued on this problem.
While traveling in hot weather or long distance consumer noticed gas fumes inside vehicle. Dealer said that the carbon filter was full of gasoline and was not exhausting the fumes correctly. The filter and fuel line were replaced at owner's cost but problem still exists.
On hot and humid days when the air temperature is around 90 degrees and vehicle has been running for at least 40 minutes, the enging will stall; usually in stop and go traffic. Vehicle will not restart for 10 to 15 minutes. When the engine does stall all power is lost also.
