Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2016 Ford Expedition owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V150000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 MPH and pulling into the driveway, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to stop the vehicle as needed. The contact depressed the brake pedal to the floor before the vehicle came to a complete stop. The contact tested the brake pedal the next morning and the brakes completely seized and failed to operate as designed. The vehicle was inoperable and needed to be towed. The approximate failure mileage was 102,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while his wife was driving approximately 25 mph, the brake warning light illuminated, and the low brake fluid message was displayed on the instrument panel. Due to the failure, the brake pedal depressed to the floorboard while his wife was attempting to stop the vehicle. The driver called her husband to the scene who was able to carefully drive the vehicle back to their residence. Upon inspection, the contact discovered a leak from the brake master cylinder which had flowed into the brake booster which he believed caused the failure. The dealer was contacted about the failure and the contact was informed that the part to repair the vehicle was not available. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, a burning odor was detected. The contact later received notification of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 22V150000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) and 22V648000 (Visibility, Electrical System). The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the front blower motor connector and resistor needed to be replaced; however, the parts were not covered under the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the front blower motor connector was previously replaced; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that only the brake master cylinder and front blower motor assembly would be replaced free of charge under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V150000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that the brake warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 MPH, the brake waring light illuminated and the brake seized. The contact allowed the vehicle to cruise towards the side of the road while depressing the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed from the scene. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 62,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 15 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to stop immediately. The contact activated the parking brake to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V150000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed the vehicle with brake master cylinder and brake booster failure. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed with hydraulic control unit failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact the vehicle was not covered under the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle and depressing the brake pedal, the braking system malfunctioned and the brake pedal extended to the floor. Upon inspection, it was discovered that there was no brake fluid in the brake reservoir. After refilling the brake fluid reservoir, approximately 30 minutes later the brake fluid had leaked from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the brake master cylinder and brake booster were faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000.
Hello, on a number of occasions (while driving on the highway and attempting a stop at a light) our brake system has gone unresponsive. It almost caused a collision the other day when I was approaching a red light. What happens is I push the brake, and then it almost feels like there is no resistance whatsoever and it goes soft, then I have to push very hard all the way down (pedal to the metal) on the brake to get it to stop. Ford tells me my vehicle is not part of this recall for brake issues, but it is just a little suspcious that I have the same kind of car where there is a brake recall issue. https://www.consumerreports.org/car-recalls-defects/ford-suv-pickup-recall-brake-concerns-a9762212717/#:~:text=Ford%20Recalls%20SUVs%20and%20Trucks%20With%203.5L%20Engine%20Due%20to%20Brake%20Concerns&text=Ford%20Motor%20Company%20is%20recalling,leak%2C%20eventually%20risking%20a%20crash. …
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact received a second recall notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V150000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) advising the contact to contact the dealer for recall repair; however, the dealer informed the contact that they would not complete the recall repair unless the recalled part had failed. The manufacturer was notified of the issue and followed up with the dealer. The manufacturer later informed the contact that the dealer informed them that the part to do the recall repair was not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time to complete the recall repair. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Low brake fluid light came on. I pulled off road to think, but since it said "low" brake fluid and not "empty" brake fluid, and since I was already on my way to the dealer for an oil change, I decided to proceed. When ready to go again, brake pedal went all of the way to the floor. Mechanic says the brake fluid is leaking into the power booster. His research found same problem with 2016 F150's that used the same part but was recalled, but Expedition's were not recalled. Required tow truck to take to Ford dealer 1-1/2 hrs from my home. Should have already been a recall or a warning that something could happen since Ford has already experienced this with the F150's.
Brake fluid level light came on. Stopped at Autozone, added fluid, drove 2 miles to Walmart brakes get soft, barely got home and reservoir was empty again. No visible leaks on the ground. Vehicle only has 60K miles on it and this could have been catastrophic and deadly if we needed to stop quickly. Research shows that the NHTSA issued a recall for this problem on the 2016 F150. The Expedition is essentially the same vehicle chassis, with a different body. The chassis components are the same. Reason and logic therefore would conclude that the recall be extended the the Expedition , as well as any other shared chassis vehicles.
