An oil plug front left of engine block blew out pumping oil onto catalytic converter. Open flames melted wheel well, back bumper, and fuel hoses off of gas tank. Fire went out went all the oil was pumped out of engine and car stopped moving. I contacted Chrysler safety, they referred me to Dodge customer care; they initially created a case #31892226 but then sent a letter saying they were not responsible because the car was out of a three-year warranty period and also unspecified environmental factors. Although my wife and son were almost immolated, it wasn't important enough for them to check into. The car remains parked at a local garage awaiting investigation.

The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 145,000.
Dt: 2001 Dodge Intrepid es, the vehicles gas tank will not accept gasoline easily, it takes the an excessive amount of time to fill the tank. The consumer will fill the tank and the fuel gauge still shows empty. After the consumer has put fuel in the tank some of the fuel will come out. The consumer has even replaced the gas cap, which did not fix the problem. The dealership told the consumer that they could replace the fuel control valve, the filler tube, and the leak detection pump filter at consumer's expense. The consumer was given a TSB number 14003-01 from universal underwriters service corporation phone no. [phone]. The consumer has an extended warranty with u. U. S. C. Policy no. V300191293 coverage which is called a comprehensive plan. Consumer was told that it was a manufacturer's defect, and was not covered under warranty. The u. U. S. C. …
A few days after I bought the car the engine light came on, and I took it back to the dealer. He said it was the fuel cap making the engine light come on, he put a new one on, and said that should solve it. The engine light came back on, and a month later, the car wouldn't start. I had it towed to a shop, and they said it needed a new fuel pump. I called the dealer, and he said it was nothing he could do because the warranty was only for a month. I just started driving it again, the car would take a minute before it picked up speed, like it was stalling. I drove it until just recently it just stopped while I was driving. I had the car towed and it was put on a machine and the transmission is out. I have had the car a year. One day the car wouldn't go in reverse, and I checked the transmission fluid, and it was fine. Then , it drove fine a couple days then completely stopped. …
Driving vehicle on exit 73 in lisbon,md. When acceleration halts and car will not accelerate over 60mph and was steadily decreasing. As I pulled off the exit, the car stalled and the battery light came on, then the engine light and then the transmission light, proceeding was all lights in the car blacked out and the car was only drifting off the exit. As the car stopped and I put it in park, I noticed black smoke and fire submerging in the front of the car with force. I then heard a pop to realize my tires popped from the burning heat of the fire. I exited the vehicle with nothing in tow and in fear of my life in addition to my passenger whom we both left valuable items in the burning car. This seems to fall under a form of defect in which I would like to have investigated and a claim filed as this was a very traumatic experience which I would not want to happen to anyone else. …
I own an auto repair shop and I have seen this problem on these vehicles more than once and cannot figure out how Dodge is getting away with not recalling these vehicles for a fuel leak on the pressure line at the back of the engine. It has a steel line that comes from the tank up to the engine and the last approx. 8 inches turns to plastic. The plastic part cracks after time and it sprays fuel onto the exhaust system which seems to me that should fall under a recall. If you search the internet you will see this is an ongoing problem with these vehicles for several years. The vehicle I have here came in doing this and I couldn't find any recall for this problem. I do believe this should be addressed as it could very easily catch fire. Thank you for your time
Tl contact owns a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 40 MPH, the contact's vehicle was struck head-on by an oncoming vehicle and immediately caught fire. Another driver pulled over and removed the passenger from the vehicle before it ignited into flames. The driver was fatally injured. The passenger sustained closed head trauma, a broken pelvis and ribs, and third degree burns. The police arrived and stated that there could have been a possible gasoline leak that could have caused the flames to spread so rapidly. The passenger believes that a recall should have been issued. The vehicle was destroyed and a police report was filed. The mileages were unknown.
Violent shaking of the vehicle. Loud metal clanging type noise. Sudden lack of acceleration. Stalling and failure of power steering at 45 MPH. I was returning home from my son's school in heavy traffic and we almost crashed into a brick wall. Fortunately I was strong enough to maintain enough control of the steering wheel to somewhat safely stop the vehicle on the side of the road.
