My son rear ended a semi-tractor trailer truck in a snow storm last week. He was wearing his seat belt. Air temps previous week were in the -20 to -40 range. Temperature at time of accident was -15. I raise this as indicated below. My concerns are: 1. The air bag did not deploy. There was $6000 damage to our 2004 Chevy k2500 crew cab pick-up to include grill, radiator, both quarter panels, hood, bumper and forward engine components. The impact speed was estimated at 25 MPH. That should have deployed the bag. I realize that there were no injuries and my insurance would have covered the bag, but I think (as did everyone else who have seen the damage) that the bag should have deployed. 2. ABS system failed. Truck rear end slid to right toward traffic. My son was able to regain control. …

On 11/23/2011 at 6:45 am est, I was headed down a snow covered road when I noticed a plow truck coming towards me at a high rate of speed. I then hit the brakes at normal pressure and the pedal went to the floor with next to no resistance, having no brakes I downshifted the automatic transmission slowing me but not fast enough, I collided with a fire hydrant at the top of a steep embankment on the side of the at approximately 35mph and knocked the fire hydrant out of the ground. Had the fire hydrant not been there, I could've fell more than 50 feet down to my demise. Luckily, the hydrant was shut off and the only damage (because the plow frame absorbed most of the impact) was the front bumper. …

Steering

On 09/27/2000 I was slowing down for a dip, with my foot on the brake. As I crossed the hit the dip and/or just after the dip, I heard a noise come from the left front drivers side of truck. At the same time the left front of truck dropped a little. I was still rolling and didn't think anything was wrong, so I rolled on about 100 ft. To a right curve. When I tried to turn the vehicle it only turned from a 2 oclock position to a 4 oclock position. Truck went into ditch, and stopped on the other side. The front wheel was broken off with lug nuts, studs, and other pieces of metal still in the left front tire under the truck. When the wrecker came, I got into the truck to try to guide it as they pulled it out. I put my foot on the brakes before I tried to start the truck, and there was no brake pressure at all. The brake pedal went all the way to the floor. …

Engine & cooling

Large intake leak, antifreeze leaking into the oil milked oil. When I checked the oil I found this so started looking for other problems. I put a pressure test on the radiator and found the leak immediately! The antifreeze came out from under the front edge of the #1 cylinder!I am very up set to hear that this is very common and would like to see g.m. Recall their trucks for this problem! I repaired the problem myself. If I had to pay some one to fix this problem it would have cost in the range of $700-$900.
