What owners report

The vehicle first reported a drivetrain malfunction and the message said to continue driving with reduced engine performance. The vehicle did get us home. I tested it the following day and received the same fault after a couple of miles of driving. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, a 50 mile trip. After a couple of weeks the dealer stated that the vehicle was ready for pickup. I got in the vehicle and 1.5 miles later received a drive fault warning me to stop carefully and turn off drive ready mode. I was driving on a very busy narrow road looking for a place to pull over when the vehicle lost all motive power. Having no choice but to try and pull over very quickly as we were going up a hill. The police had the vehicle towed and returned us to the dealer. Losing all motive power without warning is I believe a serious safety issue. …

2024 X5 · Nov 2024

We are 900 miles from home driving on the interstate, and received an error message saying that there was a drive train malfunction and we had to stop the car immediately. We were in the middle of nowhere, but able to pull over and turn the car off, and contacted roadside assistance. We were unable to start the car again. We were told there was a major malfunction of the drive train power supply and we could not operate the vehicle until it had been inspected at a service center 2 hours away. This vehicle is brand new with less than 2000 miles on it, and this is the second issue we have encountered with it. We had another sensor error pop up 3 days after purchase, and had to take this car into the dealership for 10 days. We have actually been driving this car for less than 2 weeks. This is completely unacceptable and dangerous. …

The high-voltage battery system (this is a plug-in hybrid) began intermittently displaying a "battery not properly charging" warning approximately 6 months ago; the issue would resolve after plugging in and charging. On July 14, 2026, while driving, the vehicle displayed a "critical battery failure - pull over immediately and drive slowly" warning. The driver pulled over and shut off the vehicle; the warning cleared and the car appeared to drive normally afterward. This warning recurred several times over the following weeks under the same pattern. On August 6, 2026, the same critical battery failure warning appeared while driving; this time steering feel and drivetrain response were abnormal, and the air conditioning and several electronic features stopped working. …

2022 X5 · Aug 2026

I am writing to formally express my concern regarding serious and repeated safety-related failures with my 2022 BMW X5 xDrive45e, VIN [redacted] . I purchased this vehicle in 2022 through a custom build, at a purchase price exceeding $80,000, with the expectation of reliability, safety, and premium quality consistent with the BMW brand. In October 2025, while my wife was driving with my son in the vehicle, the hybrid component safety box failed without warning, causing the vehicle to stall on the roadway. This created a dangerous situation for my family. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, repaired, and returned to me on November 4, 2025. Unfortunately, on February 3, 2026, a second serious incident occurred. After my wife picked up my son from school, the vehicle began jerking violently while driving, and a strong sulphur-like odor entered the cabin. …

Unintended acceleration when slowing to a stop. Car accelerated requiring significant brake pressure to avoid hitting the stopped car ahead. This has happened on two separate occasions. Checked to see if carpet or any other physical interference could have caused the issue. No issues found. Cruise control was lot activated and incident was a low speed.

My X5 was parked in my garage and started by itself while I was outside of my house with garage doors closed. I was able to stop the engine by using the BMW connected app. I did not have any scheduled or programmed start events.I called BMW corporate and was told to take the X5 to a dealer for a diagnostic scan which could not be scheduled for two days from now.

The electronic oil level sensor was unable to complete an oil level measurement on the iDrive screen. Diagnostic inspection at a BMW Dealership (Mt. Kiso) and EuroTech Auto Repair (Larchmont, NY) revealed that the oil pump had degraded internally, specifically due to failure of plastic components. All Sensors were working fine and showed no faults. This failure could not be detected by regular maintenance and posed a risk to engine reliability and potential sudden loss of lubrication. The car had approx 55,000 miles, was purchased purchased after my 3-year lease (original owner of new vehicle), and the incident occurred during normal use. There were no warning lights or symptoms before the oil measurement stopped working. This defect appears to be a design/materials issue affecting other similar vehicles. The failed oil pump has been replaced at my expense. …

2019 X5 · Sep 2025

Our 2019 BMW X5 triggered a warning light requiring us to pull over immediately and tow the vehicle to the nearest dealer. It currently has 35,000 miles and the dealer informed us that the oil pump failed. After research and discussion with the dealer this has occurred with multiple 2019 X5's at that particular dealer as well as others. BMW has not issued a recall or extended warranty for the oil pump that is included in the B58 Engine. That particular oil pump has casing that is made of plastic that is known to fail. In the 2020 model they then replaced that casing with metal. It is clear BMW knows of this issue and is not taking action to ensure the consumer's safety and investment is addressed.
