When we brought our 2003 Volvo xc v70 wagon into the dealer at 62,000 miles we complained about a loud whirring noise as we drove it. We were told that the technician was unable to repeat it and not to worry. When we brought it back at 69,000 for an oil change we were told there was a loud whirring noise that meant we needed a wheel bearing replaced. So we made another appointment to have that changed. To make a long story short, at that visit we were told to have each wheel bearing replaced and we were told the angle gear was stripped and also needed to be replaced. I had to have the wheel bearing replaced on my old Mazda 323 when it had about 70,000 miles on it so I know it is a big deal. How can it be that we needed all 4 wheel bearings replaced at the same time? How did they miss it at the earlier checkup? Were the wheel bearings the reason we needed the angle gear replaced as well? …

Tl*- the contact stated that while driving the 2002 Volvo v70 xc cross country at the speed of 30 MPH and trying to accelerate the vehicle stalled. The vehicle lost the ability to accelerate. The control panel lights turned on, and she pulled off to the side of the road. The contact turned the ignition off and called the Volvo mechanic. They advised her to restart the vehicle, and while trying to start the vehicle ,the instrument panel stayed on. The Volvo mechanic urged her to have the vehicle towed. The contact had the transmission replaced two weeks prior to this incident, and had the vehicle fully serviced. The contact drove the vehicle home. The contact stated that there was recall 06V441000 on the 2002 Volvo concerning the vehicle speed control; she stated that the dealership informed her that this vehicle was not included in the recall. …
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 Volvo V70XC. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 to 15 MPH and trying to accelerate, he noticed that the engine would rev, but the vehicle would not accelerate. After pulling into a garage and then trying to reverse, the vehicle would not shift into reverse. The vehicle was taken to a independent mechanic and they advised him that he needed a new transmission. The vehicle had not been repaired and the manufacturer had not been contacted. The failure and current mileages were approximately 130,000. The VIN was unavailable.
2001 Volvo V70XC. Transmission lurches and slips. Vehicle involved in major accident in 2002. Volvo inspected vehicle and found no issue with transmission. The vehicle was inspected by dealer on two additional visits with same concern. Dealership could not find a problem. Took vehicle to independent mechanic who made an adjustment to transmission. Vehicle again lurching and slipping. Took to mechanic and informed a service report now indicated we needed to replace a valve assembly. Cost: $1,100-1,800. Call dealership and informed that the vehicle was out of warranty and they could not help. Phoned Volvo cars of north America. Informed the only recall was on fuel pump and the only recall on transmissions having similar problem was on their v90. Because of the age of the vehicle they could not assist me in resolving this claim.
At about 155K miles while driving down the road at 40 miles an hour the transmission on my v70 xc went out im told almost all cars this year model and trim have this problem between 20K and 150K miles my car is pristine except for this issue the transmission jumps in and out of gears lurches forward doesn't move quick enough to merge with traffic Volvo knows about this problem and so do the owners of these cars and at a 4000 dollar price tag to repair or replace these transmissions who can afford that
Cross country; as vehicle was coming to a stop at about 5 MPH, applied brakes, and engine started racing. The consumer kept applying the brakes, but vehicle accelerated, and rear ended another vehicle. The engine remained racing. The vehicle that was rear ended had been pushed into the vehicle in front. The consumer then tried to shift to neutral but ended up in reverse instead. The vehicle spun 180 degrees in reverse, then hit a grove of trees and come to a stop. The brakes were applied the entire time. Damage to the vehicle was unknown at this time.
While on a vacation in montana our 2000 Volvo xc70 had rought idle, stalling, no response to accelerator (would not go above 20 MPH) and eventually would not start. There were no Volvo dealers in montana for repair and a local mechanic instructed us to pull the main fuse to re-set the computer. This would get us going again but it would happen again every 50 or so miles. Dealership back at home replace the electronic throttle module at a cost of $1200. There appears to be a high number of etm failures in these cars and it is a known problem with Volvo.
