What owners report
About two months ago I had a dealer replace the switch for the heated seat in my 2004 vw Jetta which had become inoperable. The seat is not used that much, let alone the heated portion. This past Sunday I was driving home with my wife in the passenger seat with the heated seat turned on. After about two minutes my wife noticed what felt like a pinching sensation on her leg. She put her hand under her leg and was quickly burned on her hand, and at that time we could smell something burning. The burning stopped after turning the switch off, but a clear burn mark was left in the seat. I have taken the car to the dealer and was told that they did infact have a recall for the replacement of the switch but not for a short in the seat which is what this was. The total estimate that I have received to repair the seat was about $900.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving 35 MPH, fumes of smoke appeared from the front passenger seat. The contact mentioned that there was a burnt hole in the passenger seat as a result of the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the heating element failed and needed to be replaced. The contact was unable to give the specific name of the part. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 107,000.
I was driving my leased, 2003 Volkswagen Jetta, (equipped with cold weather package), on a very busy road in late afternoon on a cold autumn day just outside of boston. I turned my driver side seat warmer on the highest level, (5) and in about 5 minutes I felt a sharp pain on the backside of my left thigh and thought something had stung me at first. I repositioned myself in the seat, and could smell something burning. I looked down and saw dark brown smoke pouring from the seat and realized the seat was actually burning me. I immediately turned the seat warmer off, pulled over, (again in very busy traffic in watertown, ma), and got out of the car to find a dark brown, dime-sized burn mark in the seat!!! The heat actually went through the seat and burned a small brown mark into my blue jeans and subsequently, left a small welt on the backside of my thigh. …
In December of 04 the drivers seat caught on fire in my 2003 Volkswagen Jetta glx. I had the heated seat on when I noticed the seat was getting extremly hot and started smoking. I was on a busy four lane road and unable to pull over at the time. Once I did pull over I jumped out of the car to survey the damage. I had managed to burn the tips of my fingers and my "rear end". Vw replaced the seat under warranty after I waited almost a month for the seat to come in. Needless to say I was very irate at the dealership and was told by the service advisor that "I was over reacting". I called vwoa and reported the problem but they too did not seem concerned. I did my own little research and was able to come up with a couple hundred other cases of seats catching on fire in volkswagens. …

On the morning of 12/15/04, before going to work, I started my 2002 Volkswagen Jetta to warm up. I also turned on the seat warmer to its highest setting (5). About 5 minutes later I got in the car to go to work. I was about 1.5 miles from my house when I smelled something burning. Then I felt a sharp pain in my left leg. When I put my hand in between my leg and the car seat, I got a tar-like substance on my hand. I then realized that the seat warmer malfunctioned and was melting my seat! It melted synthentic onto my wool coat and pants, as well as my skin. I was able to get it off without having to go to the er. I contacted a service manager at metro vw in irving tx. He said he could help me fix the seat, but to call customer service regarding the other damages. He added that c.s. Would act like this was the first time it happened, but he knew it was a regular problem. C.s. …
Heater knob stopped working in hot positiion. Mechanic found a plastic connector assembly was broken under dash. Vw said only remedy was buy a whole heater assembly at cost of $450 plus labor which was approx 6 hours. So entire job would have been over $1000 to fix a problem caused by a small removable plastic piece. After days of searching in junkyards it was found many of these part were broken. We ended up gluing one we found for a fix. Not sure how long it will last.
The consumer noticed that the driver's seat had become unusually hotter than normal. This caused the consumer to sustain minor injuries. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The dealer wanted a non refundable fee to diagnose the problem so the consumer did not take it in for service. The driver's seat had a faint burning smell.
