Owner reports

Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).

My 2021 ID.4 has experienced two separate incidents of sudden, unintended forward acceleration while parking. In both cases, I was maneuvering at very low speeds (less than 5 mph) and transitioning from a stopped position, or from reverse into drive, with the intention to move forward only a few inches. But instead of creeping forward as normal, the vehicle suddenly jerked forward approximately one foot. In the first of two incidents (approx. October 2025), it crashed into the car in front of me. In a second incident (3/14/2026), it crashed into an EV charging station. This is a safety concern and may be related to steering wheel capacitive touch controls, possible unintended activation of adaptive cruise control (ACC) or "resume" function, or erroneous or overly sensitive input from the steering wheel control module. No warning signs or messages appeared prior to the failure. …

I was pulling into a parking space and slowly moving forward to get to the front of the space. The car spurted forward about 2 feet with force and crashed into a cement based light standard. There was significant damage to the front end. No injuries. Airbag did not inflate. Vehicle is currently at body shop but no one has looked at the 'black box'. Geico rep and adjuster at the body shop have looked at the car. Safety was at risk due to crashing in to a solid object. Fortunately I was going slow when it accelerated and did not have enough time or space to cause injuries

There's an active recall for the doors on this car with guidance not to bring it in due to lack of parts to fix the vehicle. On 1/11/24 I was driving this car, on a major interstate, heard clicking noises, and the door decided to open on its on while the car was in motion. I was able to pull over and shut the door. On 1/12/24, the door decided to open on it's own again and make very loud clicking noises. At both times I was going around 15 miles an hour on major roads in my local area. Now, the door will not open from the exterior and still making major clicking noises. I was finally able to get it into the shop on 1/25/24 in which they did a diagnosis and confirmed the car needs a new door handle assembly but don't have a ETA on the parts for the assembly for this model vehicle. …

My 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is subject to open NHTSA Safety Recall 24V-651 (Volkswagen recall 57J9) for the exterior door handles. The recall states that water can enter the door handle electronics and cause a door to open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion, which increases the risk of injury to occupants and others. On 10/16/2026 I took the vehicle to a Volkswagen dealer in Tracy, California, specifically to have this recall performed at no cost. The dealer's own check-in estimate recorded the recall as "verified open." The dealer kept the vehicle from 7:43 AM until about 11:00 AM and returned it without performing the recall. Recall parts were reported as not available, and the recall job no longer appears on the final invoice. As a result, the recall remedy for a door that can open unexpectedly while driving has still not been completed on my vehicle. …
