Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2010 Toyota Camry owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
While attempting to park my vehicle on April 20, 2017, my car surged forward and did not slow down when brakes were applied. I hit another parked vehicle and did considerable damage to that vehicle as well as to the front end of my car. Over $6,000 worth of damage was done to my car alone. On sept. 7, 2017, again while trying to park my car, I was advancing very slowly and pressing very lightly on the accelerator pedal when the car surged forward very quickly. I tried with great force to apply the brake so as not to hit any other vehicles near me. Luckily, I was able to get the car to stop but was frightened to death. The accelerator pedal did not respond appropriately to the little pressure I applied when attempting to part the car in both instances.

Toyota Camry 2010, was driven to dentist office parking lot. While parking the brake was pressed to bring it to a standstill. However, it suddenly accelerated and leaped forward and smashed against an immovable wall in front. All this while the wheel kept on spinning uncontrollably. Front of car is badly mauled depicting the uncalled for momentum. Glad that there was a wall as this aborted the fearsome craze. Driver badly shaken with moderate injury. Never exprienced this before.

I was stopped in line of a drive thru restaurant. The vehicles were not moving and I was waiting with my foot on the break. All of a sudden the engine surged and the car lurched forward hitting the car in front of me. I pushed as hard as possible on the break pedal but the car did not stop until it hit the car in front of me.
While stopped in a private parking lot in stall, but while foot on brake yet & engine running, vehicle accelerated jumped a curb crossed grass island & struck a vehicle facing mine. Vehicle was stationary prior to accelerating.
On February 2, 2010 I was entering my garage and slowly drove in, I then placed my foot on the brake to stop, I then opened the drivers side door slightly as I was about to place the vehicle in park a short revving of the engine began, right before I placed the shifter into park the vehicle jumped into reverse and began to accelerate backwards, causing damage to the drivers side door which flew open due to the reverse acceleration, the wall in my garage ,the garage railing , the side panel of the garage were all damaged as a result. I then slammed on the brakes and the parking brakes, placed the shifter in neutral and then turned off the engine, I then called the Toyota corporation and explained the event to them. Their process was slow and not considerate to my needs as a consumer. …
I'm not sure exactly when the problems with unexpected acceleration began with this car, but they are fairly recent. All occurred when the car was stopped or moving very slowly. I do not have very good recollections of the earliest of these occurrences, but I can remember the last three clearly. The first of these was in March 2015. I was driving in an area where the speed limit was 35 MPH and had stopped for a traffic signal. I remember clearly that I had my foot solidly on the brake pedal; I had been making a special point of that as a result of the earlier occurrences. I felt the engine speed up, but the car did not move. The second occasion was on March 29th when I was driving in a residential area and had stopped at a four-way stop. I was waiting for a pedestrian (walking a dog) who was crossing the road on the opposite side from where I was stopped. …
2010 Toyota Camry bought 2 months before recall news / 5,000 miles / had recall work done at a Toyota dealership on March 4, 2010 / on July 25, 2010 while in line at drive-through, I had my foot on the brake waiting my turn in line. Suddenly, the engine began to rev, even though I didn't have my foot on the accelerator but did have my foot on the brake. The back tires began spinning, and although I was mashing down on the brakes as hard as I could, the vehicle moved forward (producing skid marks) and hit the truck in front of me. My Camry pushed into the truck's trailer hitch, bending the rebar in the front of my car , which pushed up the radiator, etc. There was a witness who was standing next to the drive-in window because the restaurant had messed up his order. …
