Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2007 Mini Cooper owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
On almost all r56 model mini coopers the passenger seat occupancy sensor has a major malfunction that causes it to fail and pop up an airbag sensor light even when someone is sitting in the seat, Mini USA did not issue a recall but rather a reimbursement form for owners in 2017 the last year of production for that car and did not publicly disclose this. I feel as though this should be a recall as it is common enough for bypass devices to be normal for this car
The airbag warning light randomly remains on. From what I understand this is a known issue as there has been previous recalls by Mini. This could potentially mean the airbag system is faulty and non-operational. Based on online searches, it seems like a lot of there problem are wiring problems though, bad connections. The previous recalls should be extended further, as there are other cars with the same problem, like mine.
Restraint System Malfunction Fault in passenger-restraint system effecting airbag, belt tensioner or belt-force limiter. Having to replace passenger seat or sensor to indicate I have a passenger so the airbag will deploy. It looks like there may have been a recall for this in the past according to an article I found, but my VIN does not come up as needing this item replaced. Cost is approximately $800.
Passenger airbag warning light is illuminated and cannot be fixed. Paasenger seat weight wiring harness is defective. The replacement parts cannot be purchased (6 month backlist). This is a very dangerous defect.
The air bag/seat belt system indicator lamps on the dash (behind the steering wheel) and in the speedometer cluster (center of dashboard) are on while driving the car with the seat belts properly fastened. This began on about 12/21/2014 with an odometer reading of 81,190 miles. Shortly after that I contacted the motorwerks Mini, bloomington, mn, and was told there was no recall on this issue and it was not covered by warranty. I also contacted Mini customer relations and checked the NHTSA.gov site to confirm this. I kept watching the Takata recalls, but my car was never included. I also called the dealership and Mini customer relations several more time, but got the same answer. Then on 5/11/17, we received a limited extended warranty letter from Mini that covered the seat occupancy mat. …
Front passenger seat air bag indicator light stayed on for long periods and sometimes went off. Yesterday BMW/Mini dealership diagnosed seat sensor mat sending fault code. Dealership would not let me have copy of diagnostic report and I asked several times to have a copy. Part must be defective. My out of pocket cost to replace defective sensor mat is $1,371.00 for the part which I had to prepay before dealership would order it. Labor to install and program new passenger seat sensor mat is estimated at $505.00. Mileage at time of failure around 22,000. Car is on an island where you cannot drive long distances. I must replace the sensor mat now, at my own expense, in order to pass state of hawaii annual automobile safety inspection. Mini coopers manufactured in 2005 and 2006 were recalled last year for defective passenger seat sensor mats. …
[redacted] . Airbag sensor recall. My car is part of a recall under MINI Recall 23V-xxx: Footwell Module. I took my car to a dealer and they told me that they would not repair it because my car is a 2007. My mileage is 102,000K miles. The notice says Im covered but they say im not. The recall notice is for the year of my car and they are saying my car is too old. This recall is for the year of my car so I am not understanding. A light comes on that shows the passenger airbag. Upon inspection by the dealer, it is a faulty seat mat sensor and needs to be replaced and cost $2,120.56. I dont have that kind of money. This should be addressed under the recall. My name is [redacted] . Phone [redacted] . The dealership is Mini Cooper Downtown Los Angeles. 6333 S Almeda Los Angeles Ca 90001. I never received this recall notice and knew of this only because the light indicator came on.
My 2007 Mini passenger air bag warning light came on and I had to have the seat replaced by the dealer due to weight sensor failure in the passenger seat. It was a defective faulty passenger seat weight harness sensor failure according to the dealer. The whole seat had to be replaced as a result of the defect. I now see that nhsta/BMW is recalling Mini coopers for the same problem but according to the dealer and the customer service hot line rep my Mini is not on the recall list. It should be. I have note many Mini owner complaints of the same problem and year as my car on line. The car rarely has a passenger in the passenger seat and the safety air bag harness should not of failed at such a low mileage usage. The recall notice as presented in auto blog follows. …
Hello, I understand that there has been a recall issued for certain Mini coopers with faulty passenger air bag sensors. I am writing today because I have a 2007 Mini Cooper hardtop that has had a faulty passenger air bag sensor for over a year, however my specific car is not yet included in the recall because it is a hardtop, not a convertible, even though it is was produced in the same time span. Please, please, please let them know that they have not included all of the affected vehicles. My VIN number is [redacted] thank you!
Passenger seat air bag light stays on most of the time. Local dealership diagnosed passenger seat sensor mat defective and must be replaced. On January 12, 2016, I prepaid the cost of the replacement part at nearly $1,400 dollars. On January 21, 2016, the dealership informed me that the part is on national back order. Estimated time of arrival is May 2016. With last year's recall of 2005 and 2006 Mini Cooper hardtops and 2005- 2008 convertibles for this defective safety part, I am shocked and disappointed there is a back order and such a long wait time for the replacement part to arrive.
